Does anyone have experience or opinions on the Mountain Equipment Ion Bivvy bag?

It is £60 at Ultimate Outdoors at the moment and seems ok. I guess it is light enough to use with a tarp and seems slightly better than the Rab Survival Zone.

BTW I am 6'5" and have a long sleeping bag so I wonder if it is long enough. Anyone got recommendations for a cheapish bivvy bag that can take a down / synthetic mix, long sleeping bag.

There's the Alpkit Hunka, it much be too short if you have a longish sleeping bag but the dimentions are on the website. £30

The Bristish Army bivi bag is huge, but heavier than most You can get these off ebay for about £30. I've got one of these and like it. But if I was buying again I would buy and Alpkit or one of the Rab's.

Alpkit Hunka Large due in soonish - check out website - could be suitable?  I think Rab's Survival Zone is sometimes available in Large, too.

Our Ion Bivi is designed to fit our longest / largest sleeping bag (i.e. Everest in XL length) which is approx 235cm.

Main difference to some other lightweight bivi's is its large cowl hood, which gives additional protection in inclement weather but also retains heat insulation around the head better.

It is only water resistant, but to 1500mm and has taped seams. Its not waterproof but I have used happily snow-holing in Scotland and on open bivi's in the Alps.

 I hope this helps

Richard

Thank you for posting, it is good to hear from manufacturer's.

I thought that 1500mm is sufficient to call it waterproof? I have seen something that the BS has 1500mm as the limit for being able to use the word waterproof. Is this the case?

If I go for the Ion I would be using it with a tarp or possibly in a single skin tent in inclement conditions. Would this be a suitable product? I just think it is long enought as my bag is about that size.

The industry standard for measuring a fabric’s water permeability (or it’s waterproofing ) is to place a column of water on the fabric and increase the level of water to find the point at which the water starts to penetrate. This column of water is then measured to give the fabric’s waterproof rating in mm. e.g. 1500mm. (1.5 meters). For a material to be rated as waterproof it has to pass a minimum Hydrostatic Head test of 1500MM.
