I could pitch a tunnel easily on that photograph. Look at all those boulders for guying off.

well yeah, but it's not about what can be done. it's what is best for you. i could just forget tents and bivvy.

i stopped at that point because beyond it was far rockier. i wanted to go on as it was a beautiful evening (that's the moon at the back, not the sun). the tent you carry affects that decision.

No problem Robert. It's just that i wouldn't carry the extra weight unless i had no choice. If a free-standing tent gives you peace of mind, then that's what to go for.

The Soulo is a fine tent......(I am biased having used one in a variety of conditions)

its easy and quick to erect and it really is rock solid. It has a little more stability than the Unna with 3 poles versus 2, you can pitch it just about anywhere and it handles snow a little better than the Akto due to its shape and design.

only downside is at 2kg its not the lightest one man tent but then it is bombproof.......

yer pays yer money yer takes yer choice

Robert, sorry if you're feeling patronised, but perhaps look at http://www.hilleberg.se/08Hilleberg-English.pdf and note, for example, page 19 with a Keron tunnel, page 31 with a Nammatj pitched in places not too different from your picture above.  Mike is quite right that it wouldn't be a particular problem pitching a tunnel there. It's simply a matter of proven track record that tunnels work in more places than folk think... As long as you can pull them out (rather than having the pole tension push them out) then in practice there's not actually that much difference to "pitchability", and pulling them out just needs a decent anchor, like a rock.  Sheets of flat rock with no separate rocks or shingle with no big rocks are about the only places a tunnel is seriously compromised IME.

Geodesics are not intrinsically stronger at the same weight than tunnels.  Nor are they necessarily much easier to pitch, and I say that as an owner of both.  I use the geo for properties that require it to be heavier, and only take it when I'm travelling by boat and the weight is a non-issue.

I would further point out my own experience in carefully considering what I thought I needed... and then having other folk do the same stuff with gear I wouldn't have considered worthy of the job with no problems.  Common perceptions about kit are not always true (for example, my perceptions of the Staika and how wrong I was, mentioned above).

well yeah, but it's not about what can be done. it's what is best for you.

Quite.  Which is what I was getting at when I said get a geo if you simply prefer it.

Pete.
