Hi all, I know there's a few fell runners on here, and I know that some events specify obligatory kit which must be carried. I am thinking mainly of waterproofs here, but not exclusively.

The reason I ask is, my long walks are beginning to combine stretches of running, and whilst I want to be prepared for bad weather, I don't want to be carrying loads of kit that isn't really suitable for running. So, what kind of lightweight gear do people take, and can you actually run in it?

I wanted to post this on a runners forum, but for some reason it won't let me start a new thread at the moment.

Hi Mick,

I'm not a fell runner myself but some kit which I think may be used include Montane Marathon or Featherlite top. There are also the Featherlite pants. These are all windproofs and water resistant - will take a good shower if kept proofed.  Also the Paramo Fuera smock and the Fuera Peak - these are similar -  more robust fabric but with hoods.

Lightweight waterproofs can include OMM Kamleika jacket / smock and pants.

These (the OMM) and other possible contenders are on the northernrunner.com website.

Matters, For running in the fells, i use a Montane lightspeed that i washed in TX direct which works quite well. However, if i was not running it wouldnt work so well.

If im enetering a event "unfortunately  i couldnt get the time off for the OMM" i now have a Haglofs Oz pullover and a pair of berghaus paclite trousers. They are nice and lightweight, however i do sacrifice good condensation cotrol for it!!

cheers fellahs, do those paclite trousers pack up nice and small, i.e bum-bag size? I know the montane stuff does, but it's all a bit pricey, isn't it?!

If I were primarily running, I probably wouldn't bother with waterproof trousers.  I find that, when I'm out walking, one of the best benefits of waterproof trousers is that they stop water running down your legs and into your boots.  It's not really an issue when I'm running as my feet get soaked fast anyway in running shoes.  I nearly always take a windproof with me and if the weather is really vile, or I'm going a long way, or I expect to be walking for longish stretches, or I'm going somewhere where I think I'd have a long wait  if I was waiting for somebody to rescue me then I would also take a small survival bag and/or a paclite jacket.  Running in a waterproof jacket is OK.

I agree with cath on this one,  i only take waterproof trousers for events. My paclite trousers pack down pretty small, though i would say it could be quite bumbag size...... matters how big it is.

I'm at home ill and bored so I thought I'd give my Berghaus paclites a test squish.

Can easily roll them into a 6" x 2.5" cylinder.

Well that killed 30 seconds

Cheers for that little test, Sean..!

Half Viking, the 'event' bit is the point of this thread, really. As you know, some events say you have to carry full waterproofs. I usually run in either shorts or Ron Hills, so I'm not bothered about getting wet as they dry out fairly quick, just wondered what people would advise for events.

Having said that, if you've GOT to take them, I want them to be up to the job of running in...

P)ersonally, looking back i should have maybe bought a Event fabric running top. I heard montane do quite a nice one. I love my Oz but its naff at condensation control. it breathes, but because t has a carbon backer, it condensates on the backer. I have once turned it inside out and shaken the water off of it.

I would go for a Event on, i think crux may do one too.....
