Anyone got any experience with the signal booster gadgets you often see advertised on E-bay etc? They claim that by sticking one of these mini-aerial arrays into the back of your 'phone, you will boost your signal. Like the idea; doubt the science. Seems useful to have in remote areas for emergency purposes - but do they really work?

Speaking from within the mobile phone industry, specifically the radio network, I can catagorically state they make no positive impact to your signal gain. Infact that can impede the signal.

Manufactures spent millions on developing the handsets and a fair chunk goes on the antenna setup. All the networks test the handsets to ensure that the signal is at it's optimum.

Also adding a booster can land you in hot water too. The signal strength is careful set by international agreement and adding a booster is firstly illigal and secondly means you would likely interfere with emergency services, air traffic control and the sets used by mountain rescue. At ,my last look, it also carries a custodial sentence.

Plus they look naff too. lol
