I've been using my MTB sealskins this year, as it's my first venture out walking in winter, but I do find them quite inadequate, so I've been looking around. ONce I get going, Ido heat up quickly and suffer from sweaty hands, but found the other weekend that sat on top of Hellvelyn, my hands soon got cold, so I've considered a layering system, but there's such a choice, I'm frankly, quite baffled by it all. I did read the OM buyer's guide and liked the look of the convertable gloves here; but I can't seem to find any anywhere. All comments will be gratefully received.

Chasetrailbuilda, There are probable loads of posts on gloves. My 2ps worth - is to wear warm gloves (loads to choose from) until it gets too warm; then change to windpro fleece gloves; then after stopping when it gets really cold, put on a pair of Buffalo mitts; toasty. Two pairs of Buffalo mitts = really toasty. Buffalos are the Dogs dodahs for cold conditions - and cheap! Nodrog.

I actually just posted some good gloves deals in the Bargains thread here on OM this very morning mate!

Nodrog! Well I never, I've never thought of wearing both my pairs of Buffalo mitts together as an inner and outer set! Interesting idea, I shall have to try that idea out for myself one day maybe. Cheers for the unconventional clever tip there!

Trevor, When the master gives praise that's praise indeed. All my own original thinking: a pair of your size, plus one size larger will keep you toasty down to minus 40C, according to the Buffalo website! It really works tho. Not sure about going to minus 40, but if Buffalo are willing to sponsor me I'll go to the South Pole to test them out. Nodrog.

When the master gives praise that's praise indeed. - Wrote Nodrog. You're far to kind to me, when in fact I actually tend to get a lot of my good bits of info and tips from the many posts here, of regular posting OM Forum Heroes just like your good self, Nodrog!

Ahh! So I really should buy a one size larger pair of Buffalo mitts as well then! Both mine I have here are the same size! I will add that to the gear notebook then!

Last time I saw the glove/mitt thingies was in Cotswold, just a few weeks ago. Made by Lowe Alpine and called the Convert Mitt, or something like that, and cost about £25. I've had a very similar pair for years and find them very useful -- especially when my hands start to overheat and a bit of ventilation to the fingers is needed. They can be worn with a shell mitt when it's very cold, although there aren't many unlined ones around -- just the Mountain Equipment Tuffbags, I think, at about £35. The Tuffbags are also very good with Powerstetch gloves -- makes a system that is very light and does just about all year.

Trevor, On the contrary, you are far too kind . BTW apropro PHD. I e-mailed them on Saturday and got a response this morning. Top marks to PHD!! It seems they are bringing out something akin to Montbell UL down inner pants. Watch this space folks. Nodrog.

I had awful problems getting gloves at one point (too big/too small/too warm/too cold etc etc) but got a tip of going to an industrial workware company. Gloves suitable for working in industrial freezers....matched with an over-size pair of industrial waterproof gloves.....£10! Fingerless gloves....£2....

Oooooooooooh. I'd been thinking of asking them about something like that. Now it seems like I won't have to On the original subject it looks like Snow and Rock have the gloves pictured above on their website (Konagrip convertibles). I got my brother a pair fox Xmas so he could use them to type in in a cold office Warm enough for a cold mountain? Not for me but my hands get rather cold very easily.

Well done Martin! You've saved me a hunt through the six sites I visited this morning where I knew on one of them I'd seen gloves like those at original post. I had been looking at Snow and Rock earlier on!

I bought a pair of BD gloves for £39.99 (ok £40) and like them except they are not waterproof as I got wet fingers on the second outing. They were warm on the first outing, and cold even before getting the inners wet on the second outing. Still eventually I got warm after a long spell of uninterupted walking. I now own a pair of odlo liner gloves which should offer more warmth. The BD gloves are still good ones as they have a long gauntlet shape that extend partly up the forearm. I also soved the wet finger tips by putting my waterproof over the top of the gloves thereby stopping rain frunning down my arm into the glove. I still wish I had got a pari of buffalo mitts back in the day when they were £10 a pair in my student days. Also new a guy who new a guy at Mardale who could get Buffalo type products at almost half the price. Missed out on that deal too. Dithering you see. Now should I get some buffalo mitts or not. Hmmm!

Worth looking at golf mitts too - warm, windproof, waterproof, breathable and .....cheap (easily sub £15), just need to choose wisely so you don't look like a logo'd golfer !

I very nearly had two little pairs of very lovely Icebreaker merino glove inners today, fleetingly! It said two were in stock in the clearance section of The Outdoor Shop, so I ordered them. But they've since emailed me to say there are no gloves to be had there at all, and it was a mistake in their inventory stock counting system! I just flipping hate it when things like that happen! So unfair!

Some very good gloves deals here too, at Gearzone.co.uk
Here at link. And some of the Extremities gloves offers there are actually seemingly better than the clearance offers on the actual home of the products, the Terra Nova website too!

.jpg) I have a pair of the OD gloves you picture, got em off ebay about £11, happy with them.

It's personal preference !! At the moment I've got a pair of marmots windproofs (my favourite) , pair of extremeties climbing globes and a pair of 65degree's ski gloves (really toasty). Never had a problem with cold hands although I'm looking to invest in some buffalo mitts mainly to put on whilst digging my snow'hole
