Polycro or Spinnaker

Just wondering which makes the best groundsheet, spinnaker or polycro? Spinnaker can vary in its waterproofness but polycro is slightly breathable. Will the polycro allow water through? Is the breathability an issue? Is spinnaker good enough.

I am guessing since pressure is applied to a groundsheet it really needs to be more waterproof than say a tarp which can allow water to run off. Which is why I want to make sure of the best one.

I started using polycro last year. It seems to be very durable, and very light!  I haven't had any water come through it yet, and there are no holes in it, despite pitching on rough ground. I use it as a footprint for a new (expensive) tent i bought. I cut it slightly smaller than the tents footprint, and taped a rubber band at each corner. I peg it down first, then pitch the tent over it, using the same pegs.
I actually used 'Double Glazing film' from B&Q that seems to be the same as other polycro pieces i have. Hadn't heard that polycro is breathable.
Spinnaker isn't 100% waterproof, so  i didn't want to use that.

I have some Tyvek, and water can be forced through it. A lot heavier and bulkier than polycro too. Very tough though. Depends what you want it to do.

Sounds like an order for polycro from Winwoods is on the cards. Want a piece for use as a footprint under my vango vitesse and as a groundsheet for use with my new, shiny, slippy Kathmandu Basha bought from Bison Bushcraft at the show.

I really don;t want to take my old groundsheet I used to use with my old tent when solo wild camping as it would defeat the purpose of lightweight tents / tarps. The old tent was 2.6kg or 5kg because I carried ALL my pegs I had and the groundsheet was about over 1kg (big grey thing from Yeomans). So you can see a drop down to 1.3kg tent was amazing revelation. I now have a 500g tarp, 230g bivvy and hopefully some polycro groundsheet soon. All to create a shelter that is big enough for a lanky person like me.

Thanks for the info on polycro Mike.

Hi Time to go,

I've use spinnaker for some time now. It is not totally waterproof, but it keeps my bivvy bag clean ..........and, it weighs so little. Winwood-Outdoor do it too.

Nodrog.

I have some polycro and can vouch for it. Very light, as you know, but also surprisingly tough and I have had no moisture come through and they have seen quite a bit of use.
Its what I take as my groundsheet when backpacking.
