Just bought my feller a Montane windshirt - size large.   Think its designed for a hobbit - and a short-armed hobbit at that.  The feller is tall and skinny  and usually takes a Medium, or even a small in some makes.  But this windshirt is far too narrow across the back for him and the sleeves don't even reach his wrists.  Anyone else had this problem?  And can anyone recommend a properly sized windshirt?

And why do manufacturers think arm length is related to chest size?  It isn't.  Its really difficult to get anything for the man thats long enough in the arm.

BTW shirt not gone to waste as being hobbit-sized I'll wear it.

Sleeves on Montanes windshirts not that long. The cut on the body has always seemed all right to me though. Are you sure that the label is right?

A couple of longer armed windshirt options:

Haglofs Zeal jacket has really long arms (comfortably > than the Kaza so quite a bit more than Montane). Its a cycling jacket so not ultralight (~200g) but otherwise rather nice. Its one of the few pieces of clothing I've found which basically gives me the sleeve length I need off the shelf. Description here.

Alternatively if you're happy with a heavier material (~300g) then Cioch could do a very nice made to measure windshirt which will fit Description here. A beachcomber one would be lighter and still work well.

To be fair to the manufacturers they've got to do something with sleeve length - multiple sleeve lengths would be ideal but  probably just not practical. Look at how few trousers have multiple leg length options....

Is it the Featherlite Smock? I had the same trouble with the large size featherlite smock so when I decided to get a Lite-Speed Jacket I ordered it online in an extra large. Guess  what? Yes, the body is oversized but the arms are fit for an orangutan.

Yup - the Featherlite - and thanks guys for the suggestions.  Like the look of the Tacgear but don't want camouflage.  The feller gets to some strange places up the mountains, and I'd prefer it if he was easier to spot should problems arise. So would he gfor that matter.  Now if they did the Tacgear in the Montane Blue - it matches a really good zipneck I got him last month.....  Perhaps I'd better order an XXL Montane.  But at least hobbit-size me has now got a windshirt

Good point about the camo I assumed maybe they did plain green. I guess you'll have to wait until they start producing for the Bundesmarine

You can get the Tacgear Windshirt in Black.

I would defintely look at the Marmot windshirt (got mine from Needlesports Keswick). Mines the wind jacket which i dont think they do anymore and is a bit different from the windshirt but its probably my favourite bit of kit.

Cant guarantee the arms will fit, but they seem to be an acceptable length - mine fits fine.

Another vote for Marmot

I got the Ion from www.urbanrock.com  and the fit is excellent.

"Perhaps I'd better order an XXL Montane"

If you do, it'll be more wind-sock than windshirt. I bought an XL just to get the right sleeve length. The fit is "generous", to say the least.

Thanks for the Marmot tip - Urban Rock have it in a great blue - and on Sale!  Won't need to buy a Montane windsock after all - having said that, the Montane is great for a hobbit like me.

I've tried ordering things several sizes up to try and get the right sleeve length a few times now and it is just about workable but really not  half as effective as getting something with (nearly) the right length to start with

Another thought - Montane have a considerable array of wind shirts and it might be worth e-mailing to find about their comparative sleeve lengths. I'd be surprised if they were all the same....
