I went to a local independent outdoors store because I fancied a pair of Fremington boots. This store has a first class reputation for boot fitting and I was told that overall my feet are slightly narrower than average with my heels being a little narrower still. When I asked about the Fremington I was told that the wide fitting would probably be slightly narrow for my feet and that they had no extra wide in stock. I tried the wide fitting and the left boot was cripplingly tight around the forefoot (it is slightly wider than the right) the right was uncomfortably tight too. I left with Scarpas which have always treated my feet well. BTW, this store now only sells Fremingtons in the extra wide fitting. Zamberlan do some models in their range without membranes.

Colm - have you tried them with flexible crampons?

??? Tried what? My Scarpas? Justin, just in ( ) case, I've reread my last post and I can't for the life of me find where I've said I bought a pair of Fremingtons.

Oops, its been a long day. I completely misread it. My wife has Fremingtons and wants to get flexible crampons so I was hoping someone has tried this combination.. cheers

If they work with other, flexible boots/approach shoes, they'll work with Fremingtons.

Has no-one had trouble with soles? I bought a pair of Altberg boots 6 months ago and whilst they are comfortable the soles are disintegrating very quickly - with relatively little use. They are flaking and the heel has compressed almost to nothing.

Alan:
Send them back! I find that the Vibram soles on my boots are wearing exceptionally well.

There have been changes!
My first pair of Altberg boots, purchased about five years ago, had Skywalk soles. The pair I bought last year had Vibrams. Also, the first pair had no waterproof membrane but rarely leaked, and the second pair has a Sympatex lining and has not let in a drop of water.

They do a wide range of boots, some are lined, some are not, some have skywalk, some have vibram. Really happy with my pair, very comfy and hard wearing. have found Altberg to be very good with regard to talking to them, I ordered an odd width pair of boots and they double checked before making them, if you have a problem drop them an email.

bought my first Altbergs, on the strength of their reputation, last September & must say I'm a bit disappointed. right boot is fine, but the left pinches badly across the base of the toes. stockist suggested there's too much clearance inside the boot & fitted an insole, but it really has made little difference. as for Altberg's much-lauded customer service, I e-mailed them asking for advice, but received no reply. I'm £125 the wiser! Off to buy a pair of Scarpas...

Dennis, you could try cutting a piece about 5"x3" from a foam sleeping mat and putting in the boot between the tongue and your foot. I have found this to be a good way of taking up excess volume.
