I saw one of these today in a shop and noticed a brass? rod that extended from the burner head to the base of the stove. I hadn't noticed it in pics before nor was it mentioned on the Gelert website but it looked to me like it was meant to heat the gas in cold conditions.

I found a better pic on a retailers website which shows the rod clearly and in fact mentions it's purpose. Anyone got a view on whether it would work or not?

At £20 odd I thought it would make a nice winter stove as it could use a fully enclosed windshield and looks nice and stable.

Thermal feedback in this way isn't unusual.  In fact, last week I was reading a thread on BPL's MYOG section about 'winterising' a canister stove by adding such thermal feedback.  It looks like a brass head and copper heat rod, which is sensible; the thermal conductivity of brass is pretty poor compared to zinc.

Ah, yes; here we are.

Can't really see what it is R_mac. Is it part of the gas line feed that has a heat connection from the flame to the tube? I had a similar type of stove with the feed line forming a pre-heat loop but I can't see one in that image. It does say that it has a pre-eat chamber though I don't know what that is. I nearly got one but turnede away from the camping shop at the last minute to give my old remote stove one more try. The know won't turn completely off so I am going to try WD40 and how it doesn't damage the seals or the control know somehow.

You are right about these types of stoves being good for UK winter. I've used my old thermotech for years and it is a similar remote canister design with a pre-heating system. Mine has a removeable windshield but a separate windshield is better as it encloses the stove. The gelert stove has smaller diameter to the outer ends of the supports I think which fits better into a standard foil windshield but not as stable especially if using larger pans). You might be able to use a reflector as well. MSR do a windshield and reflector for their multi fuels stoves and for the windpro remote canister gas stove. It goes around the stove burner somehow, but off the ground. I see no reason why the same system won't work on this one and my thermotech pro. I already have one and only used the reflector with the windshield with a meths pepsi can stove.

Thermal Feedback, I knew it had been mentioned and a link to a DIY version but couldn't search as I didn't remember the terminology.

Mole it's this 'Rod' which goes from the burner head to the base, the gas line goes in opposite. The gas line itself doesn't pass through the flame like some stoves.

This stove doesn't burn the cold weather propane gas mix. Hence the pre-heat rod. I used propane mix and destroyed the gauze inside the burner head.

Thats strange, I've got one of these and have been using a butane/propane fuel with no problems.
