Hi Newbie here and you will be able to tell by my question Can I use a pond's waterproofing liner as a tent's groundsheet? Or should I stick to PE or PVC? Also, are those self rivetting kits any good? Cheers

.JPG) Pond liner weighs a tonne - I take it you are car camping? What sort of tent are you talking about? Do you mean under the groundsheet as a floor protector/footprint or inside a tent with no existing floor? I would just use polythene sheeting. Rivetting kits are ok - don't use the really cheap ones though if you want a decent job/longevity

3mm polythene ,painters dust sheet type. Ultraoutdoorgear do a heat shield blanket that can double as footprint.Forget the rivetting.

I saw some pond liner once that was thinner and lighter, dunno if it is still available. Think it was meant for small decorative water features specifically, rather than ponds; so does not have to be so thick or durable, nor hold so much water.

Hi, Thanks for the replies Answers to questions: I have a Mountain Equipment Torres 2XT which unfortunately has no porch or inner tent groundsheet so was planning on taking the pond liner and cutting it to fit the 2 areas then rivet the 4 corners for pegging access with a kit I saw on Ebay. I thought the liner would be useful as it was waterproof and so a benefit and easier to cut into shape than PE or PVC which I had reservations about fraying. Regards

Just read back the last reply and had missed out the crucial part Must be the time!! is that am Hell, its pm Anyway, the inner tent section has a floor but appears to be quite thin and would need reinforcing/helping out with a groundsheet attached to the ground and then the inner tent placed on top. The porch area has no ground covering at all and the liner would allow a floor as such to be created Hope this helps

I think what you're looking for is a footprint, something to protect the sew-in groundsheet and provide a 'floor' in the porch area. You could use this. http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/210014

Hi R_Mac So the pond liner is a no no then? Ah well might take you up on your advice Can I add rivets to it easily or they not needed? I've also seen in the Clas Olsen store 3 different sizes of tent groundsheet for £6.99 which could be used for the tent's 2 footprints. Too good to to be true probably but might be worth a lookin!

I don't know about the pond liner, I'm sure it would work but it would be heavy I guess. I've made 'footprints' from heavy gauge bin liners, Plastic (Orange) survival bags, silnylon (the lightest) but the film above was recommended recently and is lighter than even silnylon. Do you need eyelets? I've never used attachment/pegging points until recently when I made the silnylon footprint. I sewed loops with shockcord and glove hooks on it so that I could hook it to the flysheet pegging points to keep in in place if I wasn't using the inner tent.

Hi, I don't think I need the eyelets now that I've taken on board your suggestion of shockcords and glove hooks as they these would easily hook onto the outer tent's pegging points. Just one question where do you get these attachments from? I'm coming round to the idea suggested by SD of the heat shield blanket being used as the 2 sections' foorprints as they might provide more warmth when camping in Winter as well as being waterproof and windproof. Looks a reasonable price as well esp free p and p

Hi, I don't think I need the eyelets now that I've taken on board your suggestion of shockcords and glove hooks as they these would easily hook onto the outer tent's pegging points.
You need to sew webbing loops to the footprint to attach the shockcord so if the footprint is plastic you'll need to come up with another method of making loops. If it's simply an underlay below the inner tent it'll stay in place without loops/pegs. Personally I wouldn't bother with attachments unless I was intending to use the tent without the inner.
I got the shockcord (2mm) and glove hooks from Shelby Finland If you still think you need attachment points. There are clips that can be snapped onto fabric that would allow you to tie on shockcord/hooks. They're for adding additional guylines to tarps but they might work Team IO Grip Clips

Well, there's pond liner and there's pond liner... Some is thick butyl stuff, and smoe is simply a thick polythene. My mate uses the latter for a car camping footprint. I don't use any attachment on my footprint; just stick it under the tent. Although R_Mac's suggestion is sensible it you're just using the tent fly.

I was just about to ask what 'SMOE' was, thought for a minute it was another type of fabric/material like Tyvek etc then I figured it, not a type, rather a typo Regarding pond linerl I was thinking on the thick stuff that isn't far removed from roofing felt.
