I'm a big believer in less is more, and I don't like to take any more luggage than 'carry on' size. But does anyone have experience travelling for a couple of months (not in the tropics!!) with a 30 litre bag. I'm going to mongolia (no tent, just a phd sleeping bag) and would like to know other people's thoughts. Am I being realistic ??

Thanks a lot for your time,
amy x

When are you going Amy? Mongolian winters are bitter, if you've to carry winter gear this will reduce your available space drastically.

Hi Amy,

the simple answer to your question is 30L but I don't think that's what you were asking

Actually there is no simple answer. It depends a lot on what your needs are and also your size (small people get a lot more of their gear into 30L than big people). If you are careful to avoid unncessary items it would be possible but you'll have to be ruthless in leaving out stuff. Still, given you could get what you need there if you hadn't brought it with you, at a very good price in all probability, then I'd say give it a try.

It depends...

...on what you plan to do in Mongolia, how you intend to travel, where you intend to travel to, how you plan to cook, how you intend to get shelter, how you are supported, etc.

So, decide what you are going to do, and what kit you will need, and then see if it will fit in a 30l bag.  If not, re-think what you need to take, revise your plans, or go for a bigger bag...

I've done 4-5 weeks trips to many different parts of the World with a 35l bag and haven't checked-in a bag for about 20 years.  But as they've said above, a lot depends .....

(My "washbag" for instance is a zip-lock bag with a 25ml toothpaste, a toothbrush, one plastic razor blade and a 100ml bottle of shampoo.  And my "towel" is 300mm x 300mm.)

A buddy of mine travelled Thailand,Vietnam,Cambodia,Laos,S.Korea,China, Mongolia,Siberia,Russia,Lithuania,Estonia,Finland,Germany(Flew to Portugal to meet me on my scout camp) and then back to Ireland. The whole trip was 7/8 Months and all fitted into a 30L ish Lowe Alpine bag. I took a picture of it as I couldnt believe how he managed it all with the little bag. I have the pic of it at home so I'll post up tomorrow morning when Im home from work.

Mind you he didnt bring a sleeping bag, just a bag liner and his towel was like a face cloth

It must be a scout thing but we all pride ourselves on how small we can pack our bags for our trips.

Apart from a small towel and a sleeping bag liner do you know what was in it?

Yes I remember most of what he had. Pic was taken in 2006 so I might have left some gear out.

He had a small lowe alpine washbag/fak. One pair of Runners(Merrells afik), flip flops, TNF Red Point jkt,1 or 2 Light weight fleece jumpers/tops, a few t-shirts,2 shorts,1 trousers(convertible type I think),1 pair of jeans, socks and jocks, some other clothing, tiny petzl head torch, small cannon digital camera, sleeping bag liner, small towel and some other bits and bobs.  He kept everything in one or two dry bags and that kept the pack size of the gear right down.

He washed anything he used (tshirts, socks, jocks) every evening or whenever possible and when they got to raggy to wear he picked up new ones out there. He did the Trans Sib RailRoad. Lived with Mongolian Heardsmen for awhile out on the plains. He had a fantastic trip and the photos he took......dont let me get started on them , they were amazing.
