I'm currently ploughing through the web to find out more about Polartec's Wind Pro fabric. To me, the concept makes a lot of sense. In particular, I like the added durability of the Hardface version since my current Powerstretch fleece doesn't take too kindly to being carried under a heavy pack.
However, I'm a little confused by the results. While owners' reviews are almost unanimous in praising the material, there seem to be very few actual products out there. Is that simply because they are too close to soft shell jackets in use? Or is there something about them (other than the price) which I have failed to pick up on?
I would also appreciate if someone pointed me to places where I can find some Wind Pro Hardface gear. So far, I could only find some rather pricey Arc'teryx gear at Snow + Rock.
Rab Shadow Hoodie? Or Norrona Lyngen Warm 2 (which has powerstretch panels and a really close-fitting hood, I guess to go under a helmet). Either that or the Arc'teryx Tau. It's an expensive fabric, I'm afraid, so yes, you will pay for it.
Thanks for the reply. The Rab Shadow is indeed quite interesting although I don't find it particularly stylish, but then again I don't need it for the catwalk. I didn't know the Norrona jacket, but after doing some research it turns out that for some inexplicable reason they used Powerstrech on exactly those areas around the hip where my current fleece is wearing off.
Meanwhile, I found this one: http://www.rab.uk.com/clothing/fleece/mens_powerstretch_top---44/
Wind Pro reinforced shoulders sound quite good. Too bad for the hip area again.
I'm a bit surprised your Power Stretch top is showing signs of wear. I've always found it one of the toughest fleece fabrics around. I've got a Lowe Alpine PS top that must be at least 15 years old, has been worn under heavy loads a lot of times and is only just showing a few bobbles here and there, but is still quite serviceable. One of the most versatile and useful fleeces, imo.
