Well, originally I planned on getting a 2 man Quasar but as it's going to be used as a base camp for car camping for 2 people, I was thinking of something bigger. Torn between a Super Quasar and a Hyperspace, and wondered if anyone had any experience of them? Price wise there's not much in it. Hyperspace gives me more room but the SQ could possibly be carried when split between 2 without too much trouble, exapnding it's use.
Another option is a Quasar ETC, which puts the extra space into the extended porch. Then you can always add a standard Quasar or Ultra Quasar flysheet later to cut it down to a backpacking unit.
If it's just for car camping, why not get something you can stand up and put chairs and tables in? Quasars are for perching on mountainsides in gale force winds for weeks at a time, they're ludicrously over-engineered for car camping and they don't do space and comfort nearly as well as cheaper alternatives.
If you want a mountain tent too then there are lots of other options: Hilleberg Saivo, MH Trango, TNF VE25, Saunders Space Trek, etc. etc.
Well, it will be used in some nasty weather, so I want something that's going to stand up to it. The SQ also gives me the option of being able to split between 2 of us and carry it on multi day hiking trips which is what I'm leaning towards, where as it's not practical to do that with the HS
I have an old ultra quasar that has done me proud over the years. But I've more recently acquired a lightwave t2 with both standard and extended flysheets; The xt is a much more habitable space for car camping than the quasar and is lighter too. The standard t2 is much lighter than the quasar for similar comfort (albeit one door). I used to think that there were a lot of advantages of geodesic designs but I'm a lot less convinced these days. The only real drawback I've encountered so far is a bit more noise inside. Apart from that I'd be just as confident in the t2 as I was in my quasar.
