Kate are you a wriggler in bed, or do you lay still (pauses to think..ooh er missus).
I ask as when I tried the neo air, is was very noisy if I moved about on it, and bearing in mind I am a complete wriggler, I was told it would sound like a thunder storm if I slept on one!

I definitely don't wriggle!

I move about a bit when I'm getting settled - I'm sure it must irritate the hell out of neighbouring campers: move around on the mat, open zip on sleeping bag, shuffle around tent, close zip on sleeping bag, move around on mat. Get chilly, move around on mat, open zip on sleeping bag, shuffle around finding another layer, close zip on sleeping bag, move around on mat. Unzip sleeping bag to adjust clothing, zip bag back up. This goes on for a bit.

But after that I sleep pretty still til morning then if I'm stiff I'll move around a bit. In my mid 20s on excavations (when we were all sleeping on mattresses round a gym) I was known as 'the mummy' cos I slept so still on my back.

The NeoAir doesn't really bother me that much cos I use earplugs.

He who hesitates is lost...

So you're the b* that took the last ones are you??!!

Actually, on this occasion I saved. It would just be another acquisition I could manage without....

I've never tried sleeping in earplugs... the only time I wish I had was in a campsite in Corsica when some eccentric german had come on holiday with his donkey... eeeehaw....eeeeeeeehaw... .

I tried an neoair in the shop and thought it was very noisy - but now you mention it I suppose earplugs are an acceptable work-around...

I learned to appreciate earplugs when living in Rome. Obviously I'd rather sleep without squshy little foam things stuffed in my ears, but when the alternative is 24 hour car horns, shouting, revving etc. then I'll put up with them!

Sorry JB I ordered mine before posting the deal on the Bargain Alert thread here on Tuesday, but it's still not arrived yet.

Earplugs are a permanent fixture in my washkit.  I even wear them on trains to reduce the noise of bawling kids, or braying adults.  Yes; I'm a curmudgeon at times, especially so when travel arrangements aren't working very well...

I even wear them in bed at home on occasion.

Rome?  Dear God, yes.  Only I was young, and hadn't discovered the wonder of the foam ear plug then...

I am a bit puzzled by the comments on inflation, even inside a small solo tent.
You can inflate the mat with half of it folded over it self (bent in half)
When fully inflated like that it will be hard enough to sleep on but not too hard to fall off.
Most find the best comfort at around 80% inflation.

Ah,  I can see how beding it double would work if you're happy with 80% rigidity. Alas, I always prefer mine rockhard!

Another bonus of having it not-quite-fully inflated is that you're less likely to roll off it.

Re: earplugs, essential kit, but don't pay gear shop/chemist fantasy prices. These are the ones I used to wear in oil rig engine rooms and swear by (first one, 200 pairs for £15):

Hi,

do you know if the POE Ether Thermo 9 (not 6) is being sold in UK or elsewhere in Europe?

It is heavier but also wider than the 6, and thus it could be a better option for those who need more space at night.
