 I've had a Softie 3 Merlin sleeping bag (fine summer bag) for just over two years, not used a lot and the zip has some what gone west, I decided to email them about having it repaired, five/tem minutes later I receive a reply "Send it to us and we'll repair it free of charge". Well done Snugpak!

Funny, I tried contacting Snugpak via e-mail three times regarding there sleeping bags. never got a reply! Ended up buying a chrysalis autumn on spec online that had a comport rating of -5 C way too cold even at +6 C, I never sleep clothed. The bag has almost no loft. After phoning 10 different shops I finally managed to find a shop that sold the same Snugpak sleeping bags. After doing a mental comparison with the loft the one in the shop appears to have a grater loft than mine. I have also now managed to get hold of Snugpak's outdoor catalogue with says that there comport rating are based on wearing thermal base layer or PJ's , which in my view is a bit misleading. If you look at the Snugpak web site there is no mention that you need to be clothed. There is a pdf catalogue at www.snugpakusa. with this information. There is not doubt that the materials and manufacturing quality of Snugpak sleeping bag are probably the best in the world, even if the style of they designs are a bit dated compared to other sleeping bag manufactured such as Mammut, Mountain Hardware and Marmot. which make bags of a better shape.
There are loads of companies that manufacture sleeping bag, but there are only a few that are any good.

Man I love my snugpaks—nealy froze my nads off on top of Helvellyn having mistakenly read low temperature rating as "low comfort", when it seems nearer "survival". That said, I pitched on the crest in a bivvi bag and a three quarter mat, so my lower legs froze anyway and i managed to catch updraft from two sides. And I survived. Got a Hawk 9 Softie now for the cold weather stuff and its is fantastic. Can you just bung a Merlin in the wash? It doesn't have much loft to lose, but I would hate to stuff up the reflectatherm.

I must admit that I have kept my bag so clean that I have yet to cross that particular bridge. I am sure though there were full washing instructions on the bag's card tags covering the eventuality; but I cannot recall right now where I put that sadly. I know I kept it though, as I tend to keep all that sort of stuff usually, someplace.

Hi all, I am off to do a charity trek to Everest Base camp next March and would like to know what bag to use. I expect a 4 season will do, possibly looking at Snugpak or Vango. Needs to be warm and compact enough to go in the bottom of my 65ltr rucksack. Any ideas?

Hi there David, welcome to the OM forum. You could try one of the top of the range bags from Snugpak, or a five season expedition rated bag from PHD, Rab etc maybe. Probably that way with a synthetic might be better packing wise, but consider a proper down bag too as the conditions there will more suit them I reckon. Might be a little more bulky but likely much warmer too. In the end it is down to your budget basically.

do snugpak have a factory shop attached to their factory ? its not far from me and a try before you buy with discounts would apeal to me being a tight yorkshireman !!!!

All down to budget , I dont want to fork out a fortune for something I might not use again especially in those conditions, probarbly looiking at spending around £100. I have heard you can hire down bags at Namche Bazzar on the way up to EBC. Anyone know what they are like, or recommend a half decent bag for about £100-150??

At a hundred quid it will likely be an expedition rated synthetic fill bag you could buy yourself then from Snugpak. Try their website to see what's current that takes your fancy. Then come back here to us David and we will try to find you a current best price, ok!
