I need to get a Multi-fuel stove, for my travel plan, (hopefully), later this year. Must be able to work up to 6500m. Any recommendations?

Never had to use one before, so far have managed to get away with butane/propane, but this is not recommended as gas doesn't work at that hight.

 Cheers. Paul

I like the "honey stove" sold by backpackinglight.co.uk and ray mears' website. Can be used with every type of fuel i believe and disassembles completely flat, great design and very well made.Good luck

Every type of fuel???

From their description:

"It has been specifically designed to work primarily as a wood burning stove, and yet be flexible enough to work effectively in hand with other well known cooking fuels such as, esbit/hexamine tablets, night light candles, ANY make of meths stove, Greenheat ª Fuel Cells and even the Trangia ª gas burner."

Which is all fine, but obviously doesn't include any petroleum-based fuels which burn under pressure - petrol, paraffin, diesel, coleman fuel, white spirit, naptha, panel wipe, Aspen 4T, aviation fuel etc. etc. It wouldn't be my choice for an 'expedition' stove.

Huskyman, my only experience with multifuel is the Optimus Nova, which I've been using for several years and think is excellent. Chris Townsend regularly gave it his Best Buy in reviews. It's very easy to use, very controllable and doesn't require any jet changes for different fuels.

However, I couldn't honestly say it's the only option. If you don't mind a lack of 'finesse' but want to heat water quickly or melt lots of snow, and might only be able to source 'dirty' fuels, then the MSR XGK is reckoned to be the stove par excellence, and has proven itself with a little changed design for maybe 30 years now. If controllability and simmering performance matter then as well as the Nova the MSR Dragonfly may be worth a look. And if you really want the ability to use resealable gas cannisters as well as liquid fuels then the Primus Omnifuel gets good write-ups.

Whichever you end up with.....   pressure stoves are great!!

As a matter of fact gas stoves works so high.

Briefly: Difference of pressure between inside gas cartridge and air at 6500m can make it up for cold-enemy of gas stove.

And if you decide to use multifuel stove consider MSR's Whisperlite Internationale, Cheaper, lighter, smaller and easier to operate than XGK, burns the same fuels as it. Seems more fragile though.

Don't have any experience with other multifuel stoves.

Thanks, all, have to get petroleum type stove as 'gas' cans hard to get where I want to go. Or very expensive, (so I've been told). thought a 'P' based stove would give more options for getting fuel.

I've used the Primus Omnifuel and MSR XGK and much prefer the Omnifuel. It burns white gas, petrol and paraffin quite happily, seems very reliable and allows a decent degree of control over flame strength, unlike the XGK. Also, the XGK is said to be "field maintainable", but the one I've used has required so much field maintenance it's left little time for actually heating anything.
