I came to the conclusion that the Nuptse wasn't a particularly toasty jacket a little while back, by observing the sheer number of people wearing them when the weather was merely chilly, not freezing.
That said, if its no warmer than a softshell, either you're comparing it to some crazy warm softshell, you've got damaged down or you're actually a reptile and not generating any body heat.
When looking for a down jacket for the kids I had the choice of Berghaus, TNF Nuptse or a Marmot Guide. I didn't even order the Berghaus as I knew bulk and weight would be an issue. I ordered the other 2. The Nuptse was distinctly poor compared with the Marmot Guide. the Nuptse just didn't loft, even after 24 hrs. The Marmot (£10 dearer) is fantastic - my daughter adores it and my son is eagerly awaiting her growing out of it. That was 12 months ago and the kids versions, but it has coloured my view of TNF quality.
I saw some Nuptse jackets the other day, and thought them to be a lot poorer quality than they used to be. Whilst it used to get a lot of stick as the 'TNF Numpty', it was actually a reasonable jacket, but I'd look elsewhere if the quality is as poor as it seems to be now; plenty of other choices at the same price or cheaper.
i looked up tnf down vest and bought the rab one, only a little more money and it was a fantastic buy, its only a sleeveless thing, but honestly i think theirs been twice i felt i should of had bought the proper jacket.
i love my rab, its so cosy and warm.
my choice was made as the rab fitted better and i trusted it more.
saying that weve all bought things in the sales and not worn/used.
at £75, id say if your not going to wear it, sell it.
For £75 you got a real bargain ! It's real value for money at that price. It's a decent down jacket - probably the best piece of kit I have bought to date. I've been outside at -18 in mine and it keep me warm. Bear in mind it's not a sauna you put on, so consider the rest of you clothing for those low temperatures......
