Is there a sturdy family tent out there?

I don't know what the import duty would be (U.S. company) but look at Cabela's online. They have a line of expedition dome tents suitable for a family in MANY sizes. Their tents are bombproof and can be returned for a full refund if there is ever a quality problem.

I've seen the odd Eureka tent on Scottish campsites and they always look a cut above.

No idea of price but I'd be surprised if they are more than the Hilleberg/TN offerings.

Eureka is a medium  priced tent in the U.S.  Their designs are OK and  quality is decent. I've had one of their 3 man dome tents for 15 years and it's still going strong, winter and summer.

Still, for a large, extremely durable tent, I'd get a Cabelas dome tent. They have built in vestibules.

West Coast of Scotland.... If it's spring or autumn not so bad, but if it's summer I'd be thinking about Keron 4GT to keep those blasted midges out. Depending how old your kids are you could have a separate tent for them, it could be a good experience for them. If they're much into double figures I'd get a separate tent for them, if not keep it altogether.

In the past I have usually always factored in about 5% on top of vat for tax and duty when importing stuff. It doesn't always work out anymore especially if its really low priced item but its over the threshold of £18.

Royal Mail have this dreadful handling fee of £8 on all standard mail items coming into the country. I call it a blackmail fee because you have already paid postage, and you have to pay an additional charge to get your item which is often delayed by them. {I have an ongoing dispute with them at the moment over an item that got delayed - their own postal services act says they can't delay the mail for fees lien payable "i.e. blackmail"}.

If the item is send with standard airmail and not an express postage service then the cost is going to be whatever the total price is in us dollars (declared on the package)plus the cost of the postage displayed on the package, add 17.5% on top of that for tax, add £8 royal mail extortion fee, and possible a small percentage duty (duty not always payable on certain items) then you have the true cost.

A shame the exchange rate to the dollar has dropped recently down with dollar strengthening a bit from app 1.66 just a few months ago to 1.51 (has been slightly lower 1.49 a week or two ago).

If your item is coming by express mail service the fee can be a lot higher than £8 it can vary as a percentage. That's if its handled by Royal Mail at this end. If it comes via UPS, DHL, Amtrak, Fed Ex, they can have their own set fees which may be better if you know in advance.

EGAD! "Mail Blackmail"  (or highway robbery of the bureaucratic nature).

Still, Cabela's may have a good  deal in their "Bargain Cave" site page that would offset the bureaucratic gouging. Speaking of which... I was astounded to find  on my 2002 visit to London that you have a "TV antenna tax".  If that  was even proposed here the politician would  be tarred and feathered. What bullshit! (Just like VAT.)

What if you don't watch or be corrupted by the bbc or listen to any of their radio stations? Where is the opt-out?  Why should I have to pay when I never watch them and like commercials? I quite enjoy my pee breaks. I dread going to the cinemas whenever there's some film on that lasts much longer than 90 minutes.

btw... don't the Americans have Tivo and DirecTV devices where they can just do it on timeshifting so it cuts out all the ads if they so wish?

John
