The last two pairs of boots I had were cheap Hi-Tec waterproof fabric boots. I never did anything to them apart from brush off dried mud. Both eventually died (the soles came off) after decent service.

I now have non-waterproof approach shoes and after a walk I just stick them in a bag until the next time . Should I be doing something more?

treat thenme exactly the same as you treat any other pair of shoes you have.

There are certain times when I wish that my shoes could walk by themselves (with me in them).

My other shoes don't tend to get wet and muddy. So I don't do anything to them either. I was wondering if people used any products on their fabric footwear. Every now and again I hear people on these threads refer to mysterious fabric boot care kits.

I think your refering to things like Granger's Fabric & Leather, or the Nixwax one, (can't remember name), that you 'dab' on to Fabric/Mesh boots, shoes, to waterproof them.

 I've used the Granger's one on both walking boots and cycling shoes and so far it works! Water runs off and feet stay dry. HTH. H

With my Terrocs, I just take out the insoles,  shake out/rinse off loose dirt, and submerge them in cold water, wash/brush off any dirt then rinse and drain and leave to dry. If really mucky, I occasionally use a smidge of ecover washing up liquid.

After over 200 miles of trails and bog, they still look and smell fine.

Insoles cleaned separately.

I see that Nikwax have either "Fabric and leather proof" or "Sandal wash". Don't need any of that so my shoes can stay in the bag.
