First question: after becoming sick of carrying a flask for a drink of tepid coffee/chocolate etc I decided to buy a small stove and pan to carry for brewing up on the go. I had every intention of buying an MRS Pocket Rocket, but the bloke in the shop suggested I give a Gelert Intensity stove a go. Looks identical, weighs just a few g more but cost nearly £20 less. He also reckoned perfomance wasnt that much different. Logic says it shouldnt be as good but for that amount of money (£11) I decided to take the risk. So, the question is has anyone used one and if so what do they think?
Second question - does anyone have a design fo a home made windshield because I begrudge forking out £15 for a shop bought one?
I have the Pocket Rocket and it fits that fine, so if the Gelert is as similar as you say then it should work with that too. You clip it around the ring on the gas canister to use it, and when you're not using it you still clip it onto the ring but the other way up, so it actually packs away quite neatly.
I picked up a Gelert Blaze PZ Micro in TK Maxx the other week, and am pretty impressed so far*. Basically, a copy of the Markill Peak Ignition. Folds away very small, and weighs about 100g (ignore manuf claim of 88g; that's without the PZ ignitor). I got it for £10, but google finds them from about £13. Brass, stainless steel and Ti.
* not done any 'formal' tests yet.
Of course, you could always build a Clone and meths burner...
I was staying at a bothy sat night and a mate had a gelert intensity stove. It worked fine next to an Optimus Crux Lite, Primus express and another Gelert Blaze type.
I think the Gelert Intensity is slightly lower powered than the Pocket Rocket but we all had to turn our stoves down so the flame was not getting wasted up the sides of the pan, so I reckon theres not much difference in actual use.
Cheers for that. As long as it boils water in a similar time to my Trangia and doesnt go through gas at a rate of knots that'll do just fine.
Still open to suggestions for a home made windshield if anyone has one. Thanks for the link though Matt - might have to resort to spending more pennies if no one comes up trumps.
usual is some sort of foil affair - e.g. barbeque trayss flattened out, double/triple thickness tin foil, heavy duty foil (see classifieds - Yonky selling it)
or, mini beach-style windbreak made of split canes sewn into light fabric - only works on soft ground....
