Hello, No 1 daughter is off to Camp America this summer and is seeking advice on suitable luggage. She is leaning towards some sort of wheeled duffel/holdall thing, based on a suggestion from Camp Staff. I think 50 to 60 litres should be big enough (but then that's just me ...!)
Any advice, suggestions or experiences will be welcome .... cheers.

Check what the hold luggage limits are for the airline that your daughter is using. BA now limits world traveller passengers to one bag - 23 Kg max. It used to be two such bags before Oct 2009.

Your daughter is likely to bring back more than she takes. If the airline has a two bag policy, go out with only one and buy a second holdall in America or take an empty holdall in the outward bag.

You haven’t mentioned how long your daughter will be off for, but I am guessing a mid-sized duffle should do the trick. Check this 26” wheeled duffle from Briggs & Riley. It is roomy enough to hold clothes and other travel essentials for a week or more if you can make her pack sensibly. What caught my fancy were the removable pockets that are so convenient to use. Besides these removable pockets, the duffle has lots of other pockets to keep your daughter organized at all times.

$289.00? crikey.

Just get a large wheeled bag from the latest sale at Debenhams etc (should be about 40 notes) and stick a flattened smaller duffel into it to use for shorter trips while over there.

Hi folks, thanks for the replies, Fi is off for 13 weeks - 9 at Camp and 4 on the loose, travelling wherever takes her fancy - funds limit to consider though.

She is looking for a wheeled duffel, or similar, and "advice" from Camp Staff is to pack about a week and a halfs clothing but I'm sure she will add to that!.

John - good point re baggage, will follow this up ...
Katherine - very nice wheels but OTT price wise as Fi trying to fund this herself ....
NPC - my thoughts too - main travel bag plus small backpack for weekend excursions - but came on here for other ideas/experiences ...

thanks again! Col

Thanks all for your replies .... should really have given an update .... she went, she saw, she bought LOADS!

Started off with a wheeled holdall which was more than adequate but due to the "expertise" of Virgin airlines it did not arrive in NY when Fi did!

Problem was she had to head off to the wilderness of Pennsylvania next day so had to purchase complete new wardrobe .... her own stuff turned up a week later and she purchased more "stuff" during her travels!

Thankfully, mummy went to meet her in NY for a few days before her return home and travelled with a wee carry-on bag so they could split the luggage allowance between them on the way home.

The original holdall - a cheapish one from Debenhams sale - survived back to the uk and down to uni in Edinburgh where it met it's demise ... however my alpikit gourdon survived the trip and is now safely back in my gear cupboard!

Cheers again folks!

I would not consider Pennsylvania to be a wilderness .

She was out in the sticks at Girl Scout Camps at Camp Louise, situated in the Endless Mountains and Camp Archbold, Berwick, Columbia County - quite remote in both places and a bit of a wilderness with bears and other beasties included in car park visitors/hazzards .....
