Not quite sure who owns Montrail these days (don't think Columbia do anymore); the Highlanders are not on the website though...

Yes, have got 2 pairs of Hardrocks and a pair of the cheapo Divide GTX. Great shoes. Shame if they won't be easily available over here anymore.

I threw my Merrells in the bin on Tuesday after 3 months hard use - heel worn flat, on the third pair of laces, but otherwise in remarkably good nick considering I'd used them with bendy crampons and sometimes had to thaw them out over my stove, as well as worn them every day.

I think foot hygiene is at least as important as shoe choice over a long trip - I was having some problems a couple of weeks back, but managed to pull it back by scrupulously washing my feet, changing zinc oxide tape every day, and getting into flip flops asap once I'd stopped walking.

In the interests of scientific enquiry I have purchased a set of Inov8 Terrocs, to see how they last compared to the Merrells. Don't worry - I've already also bought the new Merrells I anticipate will be replacing them within about 3 weeks...!

If you want hard wearing alternatives to Inov8, then I too was going to suggest the Mizuno options. I've not tried the Harrier yet but use their road shoes for running and have found them to be far closer to indestructible than any other of the major running brands I've tried. The Harrier seem to be made to similar spec with tougher materials.

Another option I'd recommend is the Vasque Velocity VST. Reviews are variable as some early batches had a glue problem that resulted in bubbling of the sole; but the ones I have are going strong. I've not had them that long to be sure of longevity but they show no sign of significant wear after perhaps 200km of off-road running and some use as 'around town' shoes when travelling. I'm almost 90kg  so notice if shoes don't have enough underfoot - and these are fine.

The Mizunos look good - unless you have size 14 feet, in which case there's one model, the Cabrakan, which is currently out of stock throughout the UK...however, I contacted the UK office who were very helpful, and there's a new batch coming in mid-July, so I may well try them out. Ta.
