I recently got one of these: http://www.survivawear.com/product/surviva-jak/waterproof-vacuum-pack

I reckon this is a top product for anyone who is into adventure racing/mountain marathons: why carry a rubbish blanket when you can have one of these?

Has anyone else tried one/ seen these yet?  I think they are new....

This looks like a good idea.  I carry a blanket with me but having seen the video it looks like it might be a good replacement.

Could it replace the foil survival bag?

I'd also have a look at the Blizzard Survival Jacket which has the advantage of being effectively insulated rather than just a waterproof jacket made from foil.

The Blizzard is quite a bit bulkier (about VHS casette size, if you can remember what they were) and heavier, but then again it is about equivalent to a 2-3 season sleeping bag for warmth, as opposed to a piece of baking foil.  If you want to have a real chance against hypothermia it'll be much better.

We take Blizzards ski touring.  Rather than a survival bag in the UK I prefer a bothy bag, which can double as a last-ditch bag if needs be but gives something that's actually handy outside of an emergency.

Pete.

I've reviewed a similar item on pg 3 of this thread. The sleeves on the product you show could be a good idea... but I'd wory about the front closure blowing open/ ripping apart. The poncho is quite a fail-safe design and (I believe) a fair bit cheaper.

Blizzard products are a big step up in both performance and cost as far as I can tell. I think they're a great idea but not necessarily targetting the same end of the market.

I have a Lifesystems thermal bag but it weighs 85 grams I suspect for the UK  I might stick with it given the comments above.

David

PS: did I do the link correctly to the Lifesystem

I got trail magazine this month and the Surviva Jak was a best buy.

I think I will get one to see.

I saw the Surviva Jak on Dragon's Den earlier this week and was interested to know what you people made of it, hence re-jigging of old thread.

I'd agree with.. well, practically everybody here... your bog-standard space blanket doesn't do enough in an emergency situation, and that's exactly when you don't want to be discovering the fact. The only way I found to get it to feel even slightly warm was by wrapping another layer around the space blanket - and you have to be immobile for that to pan out, which is bad bad bad. So I've been looking for an alternative that doesn't weigh half a pound (viz. the Blizzard jacket), because my own brush with hypothermia came after several decades of never, ever needing my emergency kit. (And yes, I had renewed my space blanket annually!)

The big question, then. Some of you have had the Surviva Jak more or less since it came onto the market. Has anyone here used it in anger yet, and if so, how did it perform?
