I have a pair of boots that split underneath, they suck up water when walking in puddles so am looking for new boots, not bought some for years as I've been wearing sandals mostly.

I've picked up a few dozen boots in the shops and there's such a wide bewildering choice, huge range of cost and weights. I liked the look of some Merrel Moab XCR. Any good? Costs about £60.

 I replied to the Sealskinz sock thread also. 

I'm generally thinking what I believe are called trail-shoes due to lighter and I carry some Sealskinz for when the depth of water needs a taller shoe.

I've worn "Rocky" boots and shoes for over 20yrs. now.  I've found their Gore Tex boots to be excellent.  I've never had a pair leak yet.  Rocky's wear pretty well too.  With VERY regular use I can usually get at least 2yrs. out of them walking about 7 to 8 hrs. per day, 5 or 6 days a week.  

They come in a variety of colors, heights and with multiple types of soles depending on what kind of activity they're to be used for.  

Of course I can't speak for you but my experience has been that Rocky's don't need any type of "break-in" period.  They're comfortable from the get go.
