I'm most likely going to get a single pair of boots, but since I want them for two different types of activities (orienteering/daywalks requiring light shoes and tramping requiring heavier boots) I thought it may be a better idea to get two pairs of shoes more suited for each type of activity for around the same price as one pair of expensive boots to use for everything.
alpkit.com was a really helpful site, thanks for that! I will have a look in the classified ads too, that's another good idea. I'll most likely get the cycle kit as I cycle a lot and need one anyway, it won't be used for tramping (unless I go on a cycling trip)...The travel pillow is obviously an optional extra and I may end up avoiding it to save money; as you say, a lot of other things can be used as a pillow.
Orienteering doesn't need annything more than trainers/running shoes. You'll do better with a lower to non-existent midsole and a studded outsole, but you don't need that. Start with what you've got and then look at specilist O-footwear if you get more into it and are doing courses with lots of cross-country.
What you'd need for the day walks would depend on the day walks...
fair enough...and a good idea. you could probably do a few walks in your jandals as well .... i'd ditch the pillow and use the cash to buy socks...alpkit are good again, although sometimes it's nicer to have two pairs & swap them at lunchtime .
don't forget to enter the icebreaker competition! in fact, have a look at the icebreaker clearance shop (can't rememeber where it was...a clearance town on the way to a gorge beginning with W [not much help!!]. about an hour north of Palmerston?). thier socks are great : got 3 pairs for $19.
i've had some decent stuff from the Salvo shops as well, trainers , hats etc. would,ve bought a stove, but i already had one.....Do you have Cash Converters? bought a penknife and an excellent fairydown sack from there. It's more of a travel style sack, but more comfortable than some of my other hiking sacks!!
