You can use it to find your current position, or to record your track as you go.  If you want to use it to follow a route you can download a track someone else has done before you, or download/enter waypoints along the route.   I'm sure you'll be able to find stuff like this for the coast-to-coast somewhere, try googling.

If you've got more money to spend you can buy maps, and they can cost as much or more than you gave for the machine.

Just out of interest, what made you choose that model?  I know they've had a faithful following but it is a few years old. Has it come down in price now there's a new model out?

You don't generally plan routes on the unit itself - do the routes on the PC on memory map or similar and then export them to the gps unit.

Mart
I felt pretty much like you for the first few days. (I recently received that as a gift)
But in a couple of weeks I went from total frustration, to controlled panic, to dazed and confused and I am now confident enough to be able to switch it on and off all by myself.

As usual once you work out a few features, for example  how to calibrate  it and how to navigate from one function to the other, the instruction book starts to make sense.
Finally a few days ago  I started to input waypoints to places I already know how to get to (local supermarket...) , but still it is re-assuring to have that thing pointing to where home is .
Mine can pick up a 3d fix inside the house, so pretty happy with that.
Incidentally I installed a couple 2+ year old  of Sanyo Eneloop ( from an unopened packet),  and still indicated "full charge"

You can also download your tracks and waypoints into GoogleEarth.

Also download free points of interest POI.
