I've recently been fitted for a pair of boots for an expedition to the Norwegian high arctic, so they're pretty stiff to wear with crampons. They're Mammut Trail GTX ladies size 6.5, which is a half size bigger than my normal size. I'm wearing a thin pair of liner socks and a pair of 4 season socks.
On starting to wear the boots round the house I'm noticing a pins and needles feeling in my 2nd toe on one foot. I know one foot is slightly bigger than the other (this is normal though, i'm not a mutant lol!) but the size 7 boot was too big.
Does anyone get anything similar? Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated!
ive just got some mammut boots about 3 monthsago, and find i am slightly torn inbetween sizes. mine arnt as stiff as they arnt that type of season boot.
Regards to your problem i would tend to try a insole i would recommend the super feet range. I didint have pins and needles however found my feet getting sore after 10/15 miles. Its worth a shot.
otherwise as much as its speendin more money try another boot. scarpa are a nice boot, i found to be a bit narrow for my feet. but again as you know theres loads of choices.
The Mountain Trails aren't that stiff as boots go, but they'll be stiff if you're not used to wearing boots! Is your 2nd toe hitting the end of the boot, and is it happening with both boots? When you were fitted for them, did you wear your normal walking sock combo, and did you go in the afternoon (when feet are a bit larger than in the morning).
If the sizing is right, you could try different lacing techniques to ensure your foot stays securely in the boot. Parky's the Forum lacing specialist, have a look at his thread here.
I've had a go at some different lacing techniques and i think i figured out the problem. I have found that a lacing pattern that misses out the eyelets right at the flex of my ankle works best, because the laces are not putting pressure on the viens running down the top of my foot into my toes! SO hopefully things will ok. If not, its back to the shop!
And yeh, MK, my 2nd toe (which was getting numb) is longer than my big toe so is closer to the end of the boot.......not sure if thats normal lol!
Not that unusual, and yes, it can be a pain, particularly when doing steep downhills. If you've got a long steep downhill ahead of you, check your laces. Don't think 'ah, can't be bothered, I'm almost back at the car, toe'll be ok' and then proceed to smash up the nail on said toe
Tremendous, its an actual recognised 'thing'! I thought I just had weird toes!
The terrain where we're going is ice and snow fields, nunataks and the like. We're doing geological research up there for 6 weeks and it will be long days in the boots, and we'll be at least and hours helicopter flight from safety.....so i'm hoping my toes wont lose their blood supply and go cold!
Thanks for the advice. I never realised the difference lacing techniques could make!
