Cheers for all the input, Guys.

This really has been a bug bear of mine for quite a few years now, especially in summer. Strangely I dont find it much of an issue in winter with most fleeces being long enough and all my coats have decent drop tail coverage.

Mick Dray - your urbanrock find is awesome, well done!!

 Cheers All

icebreaker winter baselayers are good and long - but their 'summer' weight ones a good 6 or 8 inches shorter, annoyingly.

Hello Tom O

Mountain Hardwear cheap?

Just checked their website and their lightweight baselayer offerings are in the £50-70 range.

Last Lowe Alpine baselayer I bought was very long - longer than my merino garments from the suppliers previously mentioned. Was a year or two ago though so don't know how long this years items are

most of their tshirts are less than £30, the wicked lite, has an rrp of £20, and sells for as low as £15:

Tom O

I feel you are comparing apples and pears here.  The wicked T is really only a T shirt; it has no sun protection for the neck or arms - essential in summer.  Yes, I agree that they are cheap-ish, but not in comparison with similar spec. garments, e.g. Bergchav Tech T etc, which are also around the 15-20 GBP mark.

I suppose the salient issue here is: what constitutes a baselayer?

MH proper baselayers are far from cheap:

Advance Zip T - 50

Lightweight Powerstretch - 60

As above, with Zip - 70

The other issue raised by the OP is the perennial 'stink' question.  A cursory reading of reviews, here and elsewhere, from a wide range of people, does appear to confirm that most (all?) synthetics are prone to this, even when worn by the most fastidiously clean individuals.  Likewise, the same level of research indicates that this is seldom the case with merino garments.

I have no connection with any supplier/manufacturer, but I can't recommend merino highly enough.  It really does pass the 'Thermos test' : keeping cool in summer and warm in winter.  I was a sceptic for years, but once I bit the bullet, I was sold on it, and wouldn't wear anything else now.

The Merino & Possum beanie hat is incredible, but that's a whole new topic!
