We (senior management, two kids and I) are off to New York/Philidelphia in August for two weeks. We are hiring a car and it has struck me that a car sat-nav would be kinda handy. The one I have for here doesnt have USA maps, nor can it....so I can buy a new one (not as expensive as you'd think from Hong Kong) buy one second hand from someone (makes sense for you to get some cash instead of my buying a new one) or borrow one (given I'll be very grateful and as well as paying postage/carriage would provide a token of my appreciation in the form of your tipple) Any offers/suggestions?

Simon Not sure how much they cost from Hong Kong. I bought one in the US and it cost the same in dollars as the same model would cost in pounds in the UK (i.e. Tom Tom Go was just under $100 = £65). Not sure how often you plan to get to the States. I bought one as I'm there three or four times each year, so was money well spent. Regret I'm using mine during August but hope some other kind soul can help you out.

Cheers Dennis... This is a first trip to USA for me...might be the first of many (as daughter No2 may be moving there to work permanently, as opposed to the 6 months she is currently doing) or a one off. And thereby is the conundrum.

Simon, for the states would recommend the Garmin since they #1 and have more detailed mapping.... I would also recommend getting it there, they will be hugely discounted in places like Walmart. Alternatively Halfords do some good prices. Whilst your over their feel free to pick me up an iPhone 4

Simon I can't offer you a sat-nav I'm afraid, but I have driven a lot of miles in the USA on various family holidays in different locations. A couple of times sat-nav has been included in the car hire, and often they are offered as an optional extra. Whatever you end up with, have a great trip

Thanks Scott...yes I knew that the car rental company will rent them out too....at £75 for the two weeks. I'd be better off buying one at that rate! Thanks for the link Scott!

If you know which one you want PM me and I will source one for you at cost. Has to be a Garmin mind we don't do Tomtom

Thanks for the suggestions guys... Think I'll just go for the hire option - at £15 for the fortnight inclusive wont break the bank and, TBH, even if daughter does settle over there, its going to be a few years (at least) before I need a USA GPS again....at which point technology will have moved on, prices dropped and/or maps been updated

How about some of the new nokia phones with built in satnav. I can download the US to my nokia 5800 and away to go. All free if you have the phone though.
