Can anyone tell me what the level of detail is with Viewranger for areas you don't have maps for? Or do you simply just use the Ovi Maps if you haven't got Viewranger maps for that area?

Apologies for the naivity but mobile phones are one of the few things I know very little about (and GPS for that matter) even though I am usually quite techy.

I'm only on my second mobile ever at the moment. I refused for years to get one because of the radiation and still today use them very little. GPS, I have never had one but would like a small device like Nokia 5800 to use for outdoor gps.

I understand with Viewranger (looking on their site) there is an option to pick and choose the areas you want to download maps for. Do you know if you just pay for every small square or is there an option for say 5 small map area squares for a set price?

There are a few national parks I would download for sure like Snowdonia and the Lakes but there are areas outside of most NPs that I'd need maps for. E.g. running the course of rivers or lochs etc. E.g. Loch Awe, Rivers Tyne, Wear, Wye, N and S Esk.

The last question I have is can you recommend a waterproof case for the Nokia 5800? Can you get anything that is a tight fit or do you have to go bag style?

I have been looking on eBay for used 5800 were people have upgraded to something else. I think I should be able to pick one up for around £80 with any luck which is better value than being tied to a contract for years or paying outright for the latest iPhone etc. I also have two spare batteries for my present Nokia which are also compatible with the 5800 so will already have two spare batteries when I get the 5800.

Thanks for your advise.

Hi Impy John

I use a 4.5" x 7" Aloksak for my 5800, but people use a variety of waterproof cases - if you do a Search on the Forum you'll find quite a few threads about this phone and accessories for it.

You can pick up the 1:50k National Parks for about £25?? I haven't bothered to buy any additional maps. I've found the Viewranger help-guys are really good if you want to contact them direct for advice. If you're walking, OVI maps is utterly useless.

I've had a look at things on ebay recently, and about £80 seems the norm.

UTM Data is a cracking little app that'll provide you with an OS grid ref quickly, no maps needed. Very useful for just finding out where you are!

I initially got the Viewranger national park maps for my 5800 -- which was about £25 -- and later got the full package for the UK at about £150, and got the £25 I'd spent on the NP maps knocked off the price, which I thought was pretty good. Viewranger are very helpful and worth talking to -- they'll tell you all you need to know (unlike Nokia's rubbish consumer help desk).
I use an Aquapac case with my phone, which works very well. Unlocking the screen using the little slider on the side is a bit awkward, but can be done.

Viewranger is HIGHLY recommended - and the 5800 is ideal for it.  Speak to Viewranger - very helpful people.  I have all UK at 50k, Devon & Cornwall, Lakes, Snowdonia & Cairngorms at 25k - and all UK at 250k, too.  I'm still, after many months' use of the system, seriously impressed with it.  It is just so simple - and so accurate.  I use it for work (conservation site visits), walking, biking and now sea kayaking.
