I've just lost a brilliant Berghaus hat, made of thin, stretchy material, plain, simple and ideal for that sort of not quite cold enough for a proper hat but you need something on your thinning hair sort of day. I keep looking for a replacement, but most seem to be beanies [beenies?] made of lightweight fleece type material. Anyone got any ideas about who makes the sort of hat I'm after?

Had you considered gettting a Buff? Like you I find many hats too hot unless it is really cold but a Buff is quite versatile in that you can wear it as either a single or double layered hat.

Something like this - here - perhaps? Or were you thinking of something different style/design wise? In general you'll slightly struggle to find non insulated hats right now as they're all warmer.

RUNNING gear is your best bet. E.g. http://www.ronhill.com/proDetails.php?pId=103&bUrl=kitProduct Which is what I use for the exact same reasons you state Slioch. Arcteryx and Icebreaker do some fine merino wool ones which aren't quite so cheap but also v good.

As Phil said, get an Icebreaker merino beanie. Like Goldilocks porridge,

I agree with the running suggestions; very common to find thin, stretchy caps that cover the ears for running. I found one in Aldi a few weeks back (a special, so don't bother looking now), but it may be the sort of thing you're after.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Looks like I'll be heading for Pete Bland's in Kendal sometime this week.

.jpg) I wouldn't get a merino one, fine as a baselayer, but worn where its likely to get wet and the wind will cut right through it, next to useless.

Montane waterproof cap thingy Montzne non-waterproof cap thingy Montane aero cap shop link I have the aero cap and it has a good peakl for glasses wearers if it rains. It gives good rain protection but isn't waterproof. The top link is the same but out of event so IS waterproof. There is a primaloft filled version too that is not much more expensive for those colder days where you need a warmer hat but like to wear a cap. I don't work for Montane BTW even if it sounds like I do.

I used to have a North Cape mico fleece hat. It was a very thin hat that was originally bought to wear under a helmet for kayaking when very cold. Only ever used it for sleeping in for extra warmth.

In the end, I think I'll go for this one: http://www.peteblandsports.co.uk/products/hilly-lite-hat-black.htm Kind of reluctant, cos I know quite well that as soon as I buy it, I'll find the one I lost.....

Merino actually seems to have just a little wind resistance. I think because its a relatively tight weave. Wet perhaps more of a problem.

.jpg) H Hansen, used to make a good selection for runners etc. although, I've used them and seen them on the Karrimor MM. They fitted comfortably under a hood.Cheers
