I dipped them in snow and didn't feel any dip in temperature.

I've fell over in the snow whilst taking a leak, i wouldn't recommend it long term.

Any old crap. usually have a pair of very knackered Dachsteins in the bottom of the sack in a real winter but generally anything handy. Just bought some 2 quid fleece ones. A bit extravagent as my last were a quid and are still going strong after years.  Best gloves are the odd ones you find.  Can't remember ever buying new gloves that were more than a  few quid.. Old style wooly ones work best. ok when wet. if you need to pee take gloves off,. can't say its ever cold enough to prevent me removing gloves for a few minutes. Sure you hands get cold but they warm up.

Any way, my recomendation--- wool

You could try experimenting with sharkskin gloves. These offer a reasonable level of dexterity but are a b***** to get back on again if your hands have become sweaty. Maybe carry a pair just for putting the tent up?

Note to self  must try wearing mine again in this cold weather to see how they perform.

Have tried the Neophrene Divers gloves in recent cold spell, Not warm enough for me to wear on their own, (I get very cold fingers, medical problem), under an other pair of gloves can get to warm. When 'sweaty' can be a bugger to get off, give a reasonable level of dexterity to put a tent up, smaller tasks might be to 'fiddlely'.

Sealskins winter MTB & Buff mitts that's it, the sealskins are very easy to do things in + waterproof and the buff mitts keep you toasty, had that combo on during 25 miler MTB ride in -14 and fingers were 100%

As for taking 4-5-6 pairs and 27 hats I have no answer for that!!!!! Its the 3 waterproofs 5 fleeces and 5 pairs of boots that would p###s me off having to carry it all;-(

Seriously that two glove combo works.

Reason for edit:

If you go for the mitts I forgot to add: attach shock cord so you can whip em on an off easily without bothering about them. Also get xxl.

ME randonnees seem popular, but I'm a bit dubious about the dexterity, they look like ski gloves, which are horrible for guy ropes and fiddly zips etc.

umm, I used to use sharkskin gloves for surfing in the winter (until my hands decided they didn't like them), so am dubious about their usefulness out of the water?

how about fingerless gloves? I'd have thought great for dexterity, but does it compromise warmth too much? what about the ones with mitt flaps, or do they again lose a lot of heat in the gaps? maybe fingerless liners?

take a look at Hestra. Excellent quality, highly water resistant.  I have a pair of black diamon mitts for artic type temps, theyre fantastic. but you do need to have room in them, they mustnt be tight.

They are ski gloves which is why they look like them, but the fit is closer than any other ski glove I've ever worn and they're made of stretchy Dryskin.  I can do up a pair of shoelaces acceptably tight while I'm wearing them, dexterity isn't perfect but it's the best of any warm glove I've yet come across and is easily to zips, guys etc. IME.

Pete.

I agree with Pete, the ME Randonees are comfortably the most dexterous of the properly warm winter gloves I have tried.  They are not the sort of glove I would chose to perform surgery in, but good enough for using walking poles, tightening crampon straps, adjusting zips etc.

Having said that, I don't like thick gloves, so I only tend to wear mine after my thinner gloves have wetted out or it is getting really cold.

Not having a membrane helps them a lot cf dexterity I think.

I've got an old pair of fleece lined gore tex mitts from Survival Aids, 20 years old and going strong! I keep them for when it's peeing down. Generally I like thin gloves where I can operate my camera, GPS, compass, etc.  Decathlon silk gloves are good, otherwise it's poundshop magic gloves. Small and light, a couple of pairs can usually be found in my bag.
