Nokia seem to have a few interesting new phones coming out soon the C6, C7 and C8 to compliment the N8. I'm not sure which if any were meant as a replacement for the 5800 but suspect the C7, C8 or N8 could fill that role. The only trouble with Nokia is the aging Symbian Operating System and also the fact Nokia never advertise the CPU they are using in their phones and its speed. The internet always lets the cat out of the bag though and 680Mhz for its best phones simply doesn't quite cut it for me. It's nowhere near the competition. HTC is a brilliant compant and I love the products they are coming out with. The only issues I have is that the battery life is shockingly poor, the phones themselves don't look like they will be as robust and unbreakable as Nokia's, and the Viewranger apps don't have as much functionality as yet on the Android phones as they do on Symbian though Viewranger do say they are working on improvements all the time and the Androis o.s. and iPhone's do seem to have a lot more support from third parties than Symbian now with the Nokia o.s. being left behind in the dust. This leaves me with the conundrum of which phone to get to replace my aging N70? Do I get a used 5800 cheap on eBay? Do I get a used HTC Desire for a couple of hundred and buy loads of spare batteries? Being a Yorkshireman I should go for the lowest cost option but it might not be the best value and I may be left frustrated with the lack of speed. One thing I do know is that I will be picking up a lot of used HTC's in the future though in the interim I may have to settle for a Dinosaur. John

IJ - see my thread on successor to 5800. If you want a phone that works when the signal is poor, steer well clear of the Nokia C7. I had 3 in quick succession - useless in a poor signal - I'm comparing it with the 5800 side by side. I now have an X6, which is slightly better but still not as good as the 58, which is probably the best phone I know in a weak signal (and I have checked quite a few!). I'm wondering about getting privately a 58, and changing my Voda contract to sim only, 12 month contract, which would be £15/month against £20/month for 24 months. I'm seriously p*d off with the whole process and with Nokia's inability to produce a phone to succeed the 58 - after all, the C7 and the X6 are hardly cheap. I may, perhaps, accept the X6 as not quite so good and get another backup phone on another provider.

Another point in favour of the 5800 is the touch-screen, which works brilliantly with a fingernail or stylus of some sort, whereas I understand that the screen of the later phones won't work if your finger is cold (I think Nokia mention this somewhere). Most of my mountaineering/walking is done in cold conditions and the prospect of being unable to use the phone when cold is a serious concern to me. Imagine trying to use the phone in an emergency when you are hypo... But perhaps others can enlighten me - is it not too much of an issue?

I have a 5800 and it is great for Viewranger... Got mine about a year ago - if I were choosing now I would not go down the Symbian route - as as you say the OS is on the way out, closed to developers, and their 'linuxesque' replacement looks to be years away. Another OS (Android would be my choice) and a battery pack such as Sworld suggests would be my choice.

I'm using a HTC Desire (and yes the battery life is pants) but I can confirm it works with one of these, which I happen to be using already for my mp3 player. So double use..one weight.

HTC desire is AWESOME and the battery life is not that bad. of course, if your continually surfing 3G, playing games, watching movies, using GPS and listening to music, ALL phones will suck at battery. i think the battery life is just fine if you have reasonable expectations and when i was on a 4 week bike trip around iceland i brought along a solar / battery charger with me which powered all my needs. i used a powermonkey explorer, very awesome gear for the adventurer who needs gadgets at this point it might be wise to wait until CES (early jan) and MWC (early feb) to see what up and coming mobiles will be released. a lot of rumors expecting dual-core mobiles with larger resolution screens which will be very nice

BB - what are CES and MWC? Just been out in snow, using X6. Really don't like the later touch screens for use when wearing gloves. The old 5800 is much better - bash away with nail thru glove, or any pointed object held in gloved hand. Don't like having to take glove off to use phone!

Rob you don't find that the 5800 is really slow going through the menu's? I know this one only has something like a 200 or 300mhz cpu in it. I feel that using it for viewranger may be it's only non-frustrating use. I am wondering what the C8 will be like and if anyone has an N8 whether that is like a good sucessor for the 5800? I think the CES is the Consumer Electronic Show a big thing they have each year I think in the US and Germany though I may be mistaken. It's when all the manufacturers first announce new device or have functioning prototypes on display. Stuff like Games Consoles, Digital Cameras, Mobiles Phones etc anything electronic. Not sure what MWC is though.

Its the Mobile World Congress I guess...

 whoops, sorry.
CES - consumer electronics show (on right now!!)
MWC - mobile world conference (happens start of FEB)

IJ - I have nothing to compare it with, really - it was my first such phone. And yes, frustratingly slow at times! But for outdood use, way better than anything else. Give my a stylus or fingernail or pen top any day when it's cold. And a damned site more accurate, too, if your fingers are not dainty. The N8 is a non-starter for me as it has a built in battery - no good for long trips away from power. I have tried a solar charger and was not impressed at all.
