the only boots i have ever found wide enough for me are Scarpa SL in the extra wide fit, and i then had to stretch them between 4-6mm on either side of the toes to accommodate my ludicrously wide forefoot.
I want to do Scottish winter and alpine climbing and I don’t really know where to go to get fitted properly.
Any advise on brands to look at and shops to go to would be appreciated.
i live in the south but for a pair of boots that fit, i can afford to travel.
I would have a wide foot also and have found meindle to be wide fitting. I can't help you with local shops but any of the large retailers would have a good level of knowledge to help with fittings but I'm sure you know this already.
Altberg do boots in 5 width fittings, they can also customise them, or even completely custom-make them. Based in Richmond, a nice part of the world, so you wouldn't waste the journey.
If you're in the south, I'd strongly recommend a trip to Barkers in Ringwood. By far the best boot fitting service I've found, and he stocks a range of boots to accomodate a very wide range of foot shapes. My feet are a very awkward shape, and Barkers is the only place that has found something to fit me properly.
I tried Altberg, even having a 'semi custom fit' pair made to a modified last, but it never really worked out. Their idea of 'extra wide' is the same as most people's 'wide-ish' and their view of a good fit felt to me as if my foot was in a vice! Even if you go down the Altberg route, you may find that you need to make some return visits, which would be expensive from down south!
