Hi was just looking for some feedback and some recommendation on using either shoe snow chains or ice grips, seen a couple of websites selling both alternatives but no clear indication of which perform best and give the best traction.

Many thanks

Ive got grivel spiders. They are good at what they do but come undone a bit more often than I'd like. I looked at Yak trax ( the rubber ones with a spring wrapped round) They looked rubish and most people seem to say they are, they seem to snap quite often.

There are ice spikes which seem to be popular too, depends what your doing in them really. Be carefull that your not trying to get them to do the job of a crampon, they are great for iced paths though.

Yes I've had that feedback on the Yak Trax before even though they seemed to be one of the market leaders!

Thanks for the help, will mainly be used for road and mountain/hill walking.

HI I've got both yaktrax and microspikes.

The yaktrax are great for pavements or walking on fairly flat areas.  Only had them this winter but had no problems with them and they grip ok

The microspikes are meattier, and give a much better grip so they feel very secure on slopes, but as they are held on by rubber they do tend to work their way around your foot if you are walking across the slope.

Both are fine for road walking, but the microspikes are way better for hill walking.

I've only used them on the hill once, and that was to try them out. I find that there is always something rough or grippy to walk on,they don't particularly help in snow. Last year when the snow was about they were ace on pavements and icy roads, that's where they excel. Loads of people will take the pi$$ but I always take a spare pair of socks, they double up as a spare glove, bandage and they give good grip over your boots.

Kahtoola Microspikes are superb in icy conditions, I'd have thought them pretty much ideal for what you want.

If you are in and out of icy ground on the same walk they gripped really well on unfrozen grass and rocky/gravelly paths too.

Not cheap at £40 or so, but in my experience well worth it.

Footloose:  Where can you get them for £40?

If you have a BMC card you can get them from Joe Brown for £40.50 cash:

Full price £45, 10% discount for cash.

Not having used Kats, I can't comment on them.

Yaks. are good for low level, pavements covered in ice/snow, like a few weeks ago.

My BIG problem with them is that in continuous use the rubber straps snap, usually at heel. The longest I've got out of a pair is 3 weeks.

My job means I walk at least 12mls a day. So I don't think they are strong enough or value for money if you have to use them constantly. But better than not using anything.

I have a pair of these and they are really good, only used them this winter though so can't comment on their longevity.

But on pavement? Or shops....

There's still seemingly a tiny handful of (uncheap) icebugs on Amazon, of all the places. All new shoes of course so not cheap but they do sound like a very good solution for consistently iced up pavements/shops etc.

Not that we really get those very much in England at least. Scotland perhaps (and Scandinavia a lot more, hence the shoes!).
