Ive got an ME lightline jacket. 6yr old, and lovely and warm. Its now filthy and definitely has "eau de Glenn" if you get me.

How can I do it myself, with good results. I do not want to ruin the down. Or do you know where I can get it done professionally at a good price?? Cheers

I've done it once myself. I wouldn't do it at this time of year though. I washed it gently by hand using pure soap flakes, then laid it out in the sun to dry. I was continuously turning and 'de-clumping' the down. It was an all day job in the garden. Beer helped.

Franklins will do it professionally.

you can wash it with nikwax special cleaner (run your washing machine through empty beforehand to get rid of any detergent) then dry on the lowest possible heat in a tumble drier with some tennis balls/clean trainers thrown in to stop the down clumping for a few hours. Takes a long long time and if you have to pay per wash/dry in a comunal laundry room like i do, its much cheaper to send it off to the pros!

Franklins come solidly recommended.  Not cheap but I've never heard a bad word about their work.

See clicky for their address and the ins and outs of DIY.

Pete.

If you do dry our jacket in a domestic tumble drier then check it every so often to make sure it's not getting too hot, which can damage the fabric, and probably the down as well. The thermostats in those machines aren't too reliable, ime.

Franklins did a stunning job on a very dirty down jacket of mine. Looks like new now.

Hi,

Goose-down is amazing stuff - fantastic warmth, almost no weight, squashes down to nothing and all natural. However, as you suggested, it will loose performance if you allow sweat, body oils and general grime build up within the down.  Keep it in good nick though and it will look after you and it lasts years.

I've cleaned my own jackets a few times, but it was a real pig.

Firstly, you have to use pure soap - either soap flakes or Nikwax down wash.  Never let detergents come into contact with the jacket, this can ruin the down.  As mentioned above if you are going to use your own washer then run it on a couple of empty cycles to remove detergent build up.  Don't skimp on this bit - run them!  After that just follow the instructions on the bottle.

Once washed, do not wring out the jacket.  Just a low spin will do but this will also leave plenty of water in it.  Do not wring it out, or have I mentioned that?  Tumble dry on the lowest setting you have, make sure it does not get much above body temperature.  Yes, this will 'age' the down if you get it too hot.  Adding tennis balls helps beat the down up and stops clumping but this can take ages.  And ages and ages and ages.  The last jacket I washed It took 12 hours to dry!

If you have got through all this, your jacket will be back it its old self.

However, leaving it to the pros can save you a load of time, but can cost a load of cash too.  Last time I called Franklins they quoted me £35 for a wash and re-proof, plus the cost of mailing the jacket up there in the first place.  Turn around was quoted as two weeks, but this was quite a bust time apparently.  On the other hand their service really is top notch.  You can also get it done through www.mountaineeringdesigns.co.uk but I am unsure of their charges.  I think PHD might offer a sercive too?

For the last few years or three I have trusted all my cleaning to my local dry-cleaners, 'Saffron' in Bury St Edmunds.  I'm not sure if these are a chain or just a local store.  They offer a clean and re-proof for ski gear and down jackets / salopettes for around £9.50 all in.  It is a week to ten day turn around but they have done a great job on anything I have given them.

Hpe this helps,

James

I've washed sleeping bags in the bath with Nikwax down wash and tumble dried on low at the laundrette with good results.  Just follow the instructions.

Just follow the instructions.

But do it carefully and to the letter.

Pete.

I did a bag and down jacket many years ago, using Nikwax stuff, washing at home then using huge numbers of 50p pieces in a tumble drier. Worked really well. Did the same jacket again 3 - 4 years ago - wrecked a few of the internal seems, allowing the down to migrate. Assume this happened in the drier. Bought another jacket! The original was a beloved ME Annapurna, still usable tho.

I do my utmost to ensure my down gear doesn't need cleaning. The commercial places do seem to have a good reputation, but at a price.

I used the down-proof in an old sleeping bag, and did get to test it.  It does work and while my pal had two sheets of wet nylon to keep him warm, I had two sheets of wet nylon with some partially effective lumps of down.  Might not sound much but it did make a genuine difference.  On the other hand I (subjectively) felt the general performance when dry suffered a little.

Having improved management in the wet to reduce the chances of a bag getting soaked I've not ever down-proofed another.  It does seem to be a two edged sword, and once it's done you can't undo it.

Pete.
