my cheap plastic cup is always on the top of my bag, so i can get a drink when passing streams. but the smell of the previous contents in always there. coffee, soup, hot choc. Always give a good wash out with water and heather / grass. Is this the same with more expensive cups, s/steel or Ti ?

.jpg) No, Cheers

 |
 yes

 |
Depends how well you clean it between uses....and water with heather/grass is niether use nor ornament for cleaning it fully as there will be minor imperfections on the surface of the plastic. S/S Ti will be better as smoother - me, I'd just buy a new cup

.jpg) Do S/S Ti cooking pans retain cooking smells/taste from previous use after cleaning.?? Cheers.

Depends on how well you lick them!

Wot he said. Mines from Asda, plastic beaker thingy, 99p and you get a lid, they're in the tupperware section.

when i get home i do wash the cup properly with wash up liquid and no probs, really kinda ment during the time spent in the hill

Well i never actually cook, it's boil in the bag or dried, so all my little pan gets used for is bouiling water, my cup only gets used for coffee. Maybe you should get another cup to go inside the one you have so you can have one dedicated for water. I dunno about you but after a long days hike smells are the least of my problem, i'll wolf anything down, but i do know what you mean.

Cheapo cup off a thermos, no smells that I've ever noticed. Often soak it in water with a squeeze of lemon juice though which might help.

I used also a cheap plastic cup and I am known to the taste problem. Currently I'm using the collapsable silicon mug from Sea to Summit (X-mug). Silicon doesn't absorb tastes and all taste of before contenst is gone if it's washed properly. But I like my whiskey taste in my tea in the morning... So washing of the mug I do after breakfast and before my whiskey.

 |
as I'm finding out due to quitting smoking its all a matter of taste or not as the case maybe....though someone else said it previously: when you're hungry enough.....

I used a titanium mug but felt it made my coffee taste funny, either that or it was the feeling of the titanium that was strange. Switched to a Gelert plastic mug which I prefer, it's lighter as well as cheaper. Anyone using an enamel mug?

polythene type plastic mugs will absorb fats and will taint the atse and smell. better quailty plastic tends not to. silicone, whilst not absorbing anything, will actually hang on to smells and tastes in its surface structure - my silicon "curry" spoon has been boiled in fairy water (see, they do have a use as well as talking to you in the garden) and it still smells of "curry" the metal insides of my vacuum flasks all smell of coffee no matter how i clean them out. my porcelain or enamel mugs only ever smells or tastes of what is in it. you can only clean things properly with water and soap (preferably detergent) to remove fats. but the bottom line is - does it really matter?

Ditto on my enamel cup.
On the subject of flasks, a tip I was given years ago is to use some washing powder - daz, ariel or similar. A couple of desertspoonfulls plus hot water and let it soak and the results are great. BUT you MUST make up a dummy flask or just 50/50 milk and water and let stand for a couple of hrs before filling it again for proper use or you'll have washing powder tasting coffee.
