Hi All

Wondering if anyone has had any success at doing repairs to trail shoes or walking boots. I have the habit of wearing down my heels while the rest of the shoe/boot sole is still like new. It would be a shame to throw them away as there would be quite a bit of wear left in the soles if the heels could be repaired. A friend of mine wears his shoes/boots down at the side of the heel and also along the side of the sole. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Or perhaps you've tried a repair on your footwear? Can you share your experiences please as it might help others get another season out of their footwear as a result. Kind regards, Gerald

I have no idea but if you're wearing your heels down fast then you're probably also putting a lot of wear on the cartilage in your knees, as the heel is pretty directly connected to them.

Gerald,

Have you tried Superfeet footbeds inside your shoes. Could correct your footplant and avoidinjuries, as well as making your shoes wear more evenly.

I have repaired shoes with ShoeGoo, though I haven't seen iton sale recently.

I second the ShoeGoo solution but it is best used before the wear begins on the heel of the shoe as a preventative measure.  It's been my experience ShoeGoo works on fabric too as long as you don't mind the ugliness of the repair itself.

If you have issues with the heel perhaps a professional outdoors repairer would be one option. I know it costs and isn't a DIY option but they would also know if the midsole or other parts of the shoe/boot is failing too. I know with fell shoes the sole at the heel wears away but the midsole usually collapses first but you don't notice that only the slipping you do because lack of heel grip. The collapsed midsole could be more of a problem than the worn sole as it supports the foot. No expert but that is kind of what I remember from a shoe expert at Pete Blands Sports. I know its a retailer out to make money but they always seem honest to me so they are the only retailer I tust TBH. They seem to know their stuff and what he said seemed to make sense to me. ALthough I probably haven't paraphrased him quite right.

Anyway perhaps shoecare (or whatever its called) can sort the heel out. They might be able to replace the heel on its own with something of a similar standard grip. Just an idea. ALthough if its fell shoe they are generally so flimsy that its not worth it.

Shoegoo is still on sale - I got some last year, off e-bay.

I find it makes a reasonable temporary repair, but that it does wear off pretty quickly, and at about £6 a tube it's not that cheap to keep doing it. Might be better value to see how much a pro job will be as it may be better value in the long run.

Sorry, meant to say that what shoe goo is really great for is sticking bits of shoes & boots etc. back together.
