I was wondering what mat to use with my Rab survival zone and my tarp. Usually the TAR prolite 3 is used when camping and now I use it inside the Rab SZ with my golite quilt. However I have noticed that it pulls the bivvy tight and when I am lying on my side my widest part compresses the down and gets cold. That leaves me to lie on my back or front which doesn't always work (will if drunk as nothing wakes me and nothing makes me move then).
I could use it outside but am likely to slip off it on a sideways slope (not easy to avoid if pitching the tarp to cope with wind direction). Also don't know how tough the TAR is on bare ground. If I used my CCF I could cut it to shape and use inside or outside the bivvy and it takes less room inside anyway. I do not sleep well on CCF these days if ever did. Also I am thinking of getting either downmat or synmat or PO airbed mat too. I don't take a groundsheet but reckon that is the only way to use this kit with any mat thicker than a CCF.
I just wondered what others would suggest? I have a piece of cut down pallet bag (large plastic bag that goes over a pallet and can be heat shrunk to protect the contents and provide a degree of support to the contents too). It is a tough plastic and highly puncture resistant however the piece actually weighs close to or over 300g!! Kinda defeats the object of cutting weight if I take that. You can buy integral designs solo or duo groundsheet (190g for the solo IIRC) but there must be better idea out there.
