I'm familiar with the argument that aluminium may cause neurological damage (Alzheimer's Disease, etc) and this is the issue raised on the reader's review of Army style mess tins. On this basis, can someone tell me whether Trangia Alu kettles/pans are equally dangerous?
thanks Dafydd

Al pans are fine. just don't use them for cooking acidic stuff which will dissolve small (tiny) amounts of Al. (he wouldn't be pickling onions outdoors, would he? -ed) but even saying that, the odd bit here and rthere won't harm you.
i wouldn't use them full time i.e. at home as well as i belive in chemistry rather than what the lovely delia may say.

I'd imagine the non-stick coating on some models would help here (while it lasts).

The last I heard the Alu/Alzheimers link had been disproved as a research anomoly. I use Alu pans and it hasn't done me any harm. The same theory can be applied to Alu form drinks cans (very acidic) and tin from cans etc.

I'm sure I read recently that recent research suggests that aluminium found in the brain is a consequence of Alzheimer's, and is thus as effect, rather than the cause. I'm sure Google will help. Ah, yes... Alzheimers.org.ukAluminium News (though beware vested interests with this one?...) Aluminiumetc...

Darren, so if aluminium pans hasn't done you any harm what was it? lol

 ...my thoughts exactly. ;oO

being hit on the head with them :p

The Captain is correct - even Delia Smith uses aluminium pans & it was her reassurances that the scare was over that made me look into it a bit more. I've had to find something else to blame my bad memory on!

 old age?

 ah yes - oldtimers.

Where I work we had to find out about this link between some non-stick aluminium pans we sold. The answer we received back was that there was no danger from the aluminium.
My understaning is that the link between Alzheimers and Al is that there is a build up of Al in the brain of the sufferer. This is caused by the Alzheimers rather than being a cause of the Alzheimers.

Thats right - & as I mentioned on another thread the alumium inside your pan may discolour over time. If so don't be temted to scour it clean as this patina forms a protective layer that helps protect the aluminium.

Hmmm, so coming back to the review (Army mess tins), i guess it's a relief our forces aren't going to be wandering into down-town Basra wondering what they're suppose to be doing.
There again...

The whole Aluminium poison issue is a total myth.
It dates from one experiment which was contaminated. When repeated no alumnium was found.
As a research scientist I use this as an anecdote on why the press should shut the f.u. until an experiment has been repeated - several times....

 |
T.S. I would love the press to shut up, I work on the breast screening vans and spend half my time following badly presented stuff in some papers explaining to worried women that they shold get advice from their doctors not the papers.
