Please find my review incl. photos of the Haglof Barrier Vest here

"This Haglof Barrier Vest had some serious obstacles to overcome to become regular wear for me. My own prejudices for one. I know its called a vest, but its a gilet and I don’t even know how to pronounce that. Its French or Spanish or Turkish depending who you ask, none of that bodes well................."

I've always pronounced it 'jilay' though I've heard others pronounce it like the razor 'gillette'.

Anyway, what's in a name? 8/

Thanks for the review.

I have been considering one of these, but had a feeling they might just be too similar to my almost indispensable Montane Prism (without the sleeves and hood obviously).

I tried one on, and the the fit / sizing is almost identical to the Prism.

Price wise, I have seen the Haglof Vest for around £60, so that seems like a bargain. I still might grab one, especially after reading your review.

Aren't vests good for times when the full jacket isn't needed but you might still need that bit more warmth? What I mean less bulk than a full sleeved top but the core is kept warmer. All weight and bulk adds up so perhaps a gilet is one valuable option. I certainly know one person who feels cold and carried one. A Haglofs for women version. of course. I've often though of getting one despite owning a Rab generator smock. Anyone know if the Haglofs gilet (bodywarmer as I always knew them as a kid) takes up less room than the generator smock and if it offers good warmth for weight? Is it worth getting or just make do witht he sleeved smock? Also isn't it thinsulate or thermolite insulation in it? Is that as packable and good as primaloft 1 sport or eco??

Planet Fear Haglofs Barrier vest at £59.99!!

The Barrier series (vest, jacket, pull-on, hooded jacket) are excellent 'warm' weather insultaion. I don't use mine beyond October in Northern England but they are all ideal for carrying up to then. The vest packs down OK (inside it's own pocket) I can't compare to the Rab but I can pack my Haglofs vest in to a side pocket on an OMM C32. I find the fill fine. Comapres well to the Primaloft in my Montane Flux. I've found that it doesn't really like to be packed for long spells. When compared to down, for example, it takes a long time to loft. I think that mine has lost a lot of loft in three years due to being packed.

My lightline smock has lost a lot of its loft and thats down. Reckon all insulation reduces in effectiveness over time although down is supposed to be better. My lightline rarely got used for most of its 15 year life and was packed away forgotten for 2 years. Rest of the time it is out of its bag and left stored fully lofted. Still it feels cold in conditions where my rab generator feels slightly warmer.
