Hi all I have been trying to search for a good lightweight Event jacket with a non-helmet compatible hood to use for training and Ultra Marathon events, as well as for packing around when I travel. Lighter is better but I don't want to completely kill durability either since it's bound to snag on something eventually. It is very difficult to find out which Event material many jackets are made out of, I'm wondering if someone here could lend their expertise in my search? It would be nice if I could draw my hands inside the sleeves when it rains but it's not a necessity. The hood however is a necessity. Thank you for any help! Kevin

 Don't Montane do the sort of thing you're looking for? Might it also be worth seeing what this Active shell is like? I'm assuming it's goretex trying to keep up with event in terms of breathability?

 I wondered if the Montane Air might be a possibility? I've not seen one close up myself, mind. For ultralight I have a Haglofs Oz (paclite) smock, and for plain light I use a Rab Demand Event Smock, both of which have lasted well. The Rab Momentum looks to me like Rab's nearest equivalent jacket to the Demand, but it has a helmet compatible hood.

Wow, from the looks of it the OMM Cypher Jacket is THE perfect running jacket! Clearly a serrious runner designed it. Now I've just got to figure out how to go about getting one. I've considered the Montane and Rab but the hood and fit make them not quite right for my purposes. Thank you much for your replies!

I have a Outdoor Research jacket.It weighs less than 200g and is fully waterproof and breathable (though like all breathables it has its limitations).It has an adjustable hood which has a small peak incorporated which works very well at keeping water off the face.Cuffs are elasticated and it has 1 pocket at the front.Before I bought it I did some research and it is the lightest available.I have used it on hills and moors in torrential rain and strong wind-nothing gets through it and you hardly notice it on.Available from Wildtrack amongst others

 I've the Cypher in Yellow and it's great. I am a 38/40 and bought the medium smock. The medium jacket was a strange fit that caught under my arms, the rest of the fit loose. I would recommend trying on both jacket and smock if poss to get the best fit for you. The Smock has thumb loops and a wired peak helping keep the elements at bay and the eVent does its job fantastically. I've had it out in torrential Lakes weather and my only fear was being arrested for wearing yellow! For running or fast hiking it's perfect and packs small and light. (I also have the OMM Kamleika smock which works in a different way)
Very recommended, just have to get used to the crinkle - pretend its your electric powers!

 I'd suggest you try one on too. I bought a Haglofs Ozo as the OMM Kamleika (didn't do the Cypher last year) had long arms (for me), otherwise a nice jacket though.

 Miko, how do you find the length? does it ride up when running?
EDIT: I'll rephrase that.... not so much ride up.... but it appears to come down to the exact point were your shorts/trousers would meet your top... any issues?

Front as seen, but the back has at least 4" extra drop. Remember that this is a foul weather garment as opposed to the Kamleika that can be worn as a wind shirt almost with the sleeves pushed up and the zips fully open. I wear it with the Inov8 Racepack 3 which can be compacted quite nicely down using the compression system. It will fit under the Cypher albeit snuggly but protected. Seems to work perfectly for me and I can confidently cover 15 mile with the right kit inside

The Cypher, particularly the rock n run deal looks a great jacket and a bit of a bargain compared to alternative lightweight offerings that are own brand fabrics at a similar price. Going to pencil one in when my current lightweight one bites the dust. Got to be yellow as well

I've got a Montane Quickfire - discontinued now - it's superbly breathable, and the ventilated pockets are excellent too - but it too is cut short at the front and long at the back which annoys me as it can ride up. But if I was into cycling a short front and long back would be exactly what I wanted, and if I could run really fast and lifted my thighs up high a short front would be good too .. so perhaps that's why the OMM jacket is the way it is. Plus less fabric = less weight so it looks better on paper. Nonetheless the rockandrun deal is pretty good i reckon. One of the things I find with event is that there's no rush to tear it off when the rain has stopped - it's good as a windshirt in damp/claggy/windy conditions.

The real issue for me is that I live in the US and we don't have the awesome selection for gear that you guys do. I asked on this forum because I know that you guys have access and experience with gear that I can't find in a store in the US. I had hoped that I could order your recomendations on Amazon but the Macpac and OMM piece appear to just not be available at all in the US. What a bummer =( They both look like the jacket I had hoped to find.

Kevin S, the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side of the hill.... or should that be pond?  I get a lot of my kit in the US and have in the main tended to find the experience to be a positive one. I'm sure that you do get 'bad apples' but that is the same as here in the UK.Not sure if you've actually shopped here but the main criteria for working in an outdoor shop is that you smile a lot and are prepared to work for the low wages. The indies that know there stuff and give great service are fast dying out. If you seriously have your heart set on a particular bit of kit there are places that will do international mail-order... at a cost. BUT beware that getting a refund on kit is on the whole like pulling teeth.
