I have got a Terra Nova Laser comp. I don't like the faff tying on sleeve. Can I just use a seam sealer on the fly sheet stitching? If so which seam sealer is best?

The sleeve is such a pain to tie on and is unnecessary weight on what is supposed to be a sub Kilo tent.

It is a bit of a faff but once its on you don't have to do it again.

As for a sub kilo tent... It never will be because the first thing you do is throw away the stupid pegs and get some decent ones....

OK will try it with the sleeve on for a while. I have some 6g Ti pegs and have found it only needs 10 pegs.

I've not seam-sealed mine and used it in the rain without the pole hood and not had any leaks I've been aware of.

Some say the pole hood also offers extra stability and reduces some of the flexing by tensioning the pole. Not sure I'm convinced.

If I wanted to seal the seams I'd use this stuff.

Is this seam sealer available in the UK?

I'll just hijack this a bit has anyone used Mcnett seam grip on a gore tex lined suede boot or who can tell me its suitable. Got a leaky lace eyelett and want to try to seal it but unsure what to use. Would seam grip do the job or any alternative suggestions.

The seam on  Laser range of tents is water resistant to a degree. They use a flat fell-seam that is sewn folded and through 4 layers of fabric ensure strength and resistance. Using a seam sealant would also help if you did not want to use the hood, Terra Nova sell a product on there website for sealing seams. Use it on the outside of the tent on the seams either side of the pole sleeve. It mae the fly sheet loo a bit scruffy but does the job well.

IIRC the pole sleeve adds a bit to the stability of the tent (is ait a guying point too?), so it's not just water you need to worry about if leaving it off.

Pete.

I dumped the sleeve and don't miss it. I did seam seal, but then I had the time to. Some say you don't need to.

You need good webbing loops for the two side guys. I stitched these to the folded seam of the outer and they have stood up to some hefty breezes. Don't rely on the sleeve loops to fix your guys to, they're not strong enough for a good blow.

This gives you all the stability you need.
