Hey!

I've just got hold of the above rucksack, and I know that Ospreys rucksacks are made of excellent material that is pretty much waterproof, but they do not seal the seams. I have heard of people sealing the seams (or resealing) on tents. I'm assuming this is possible on the Osprey pack?

Any advice, experience or recommendations of sealant would be a help.

Cheers!

Don't bother, its too much hassle. Just get some dry bags or rubble sacks to use as a waterproof liner.

I'd rather go through the hassle now, as I don't want to lug a wringing wet 'sack on my bag for days.

If its raining that hard the whole sack will wet through not just the seams.... The material itself isn't waterproof.

I have another Osprey rucksack, and the material is very waterproof, but the seams leak.

Not to mention the great big hole at the top...

If thats the way you really want to go, get a waterproof sack cover...but, in my experience, if when I have a dripping wet pack, I am pretty damp anyway, so it isnt a problem.

I have an Argon 70 and have never had enough water ingress from the stiching to bother about the seams.

Now, as GOM points out, water via the lid and the zip on the front of the pack is another matter...

If you wanted a waterproof pack then one of the Exped or Alpkit packs would of been better.

Thanks for the opinions. I'll have a look at the waterproof covers. I'm going to be travelling in the mountains, cities (etc) or Eastern Europe next month. I don't want my pack to be carrying around water. I've also got a Talon 44 for overnight stuff, and even during heavy rain, the material hasn't 'soaked up' the water, but it has leaked through the seams. I'll see what I can think of.

Keeping the thread open for any more views if there's anyone else out there...

No idea what the coating on the fabric of the Argon is, but iron-on seam seal tape would probably work ok.

Personally I'd just use drybags and/or a pack liner and if it hasn't already got them put a couple of eyelet drain holes in the bottom of the pack.

I think you'd probably have to try and coat all the seams with seamgrip or the like, but it would be a long and difficult job and I would always have doubts about how effective it was. Much easier and safer to use a drybag to carry sleeping bags and other moisture sensitive gear.
