I'm thinking of buying one of these :  Stainless Steel Bottle

scroll up to the The Drinksafe Systems Eco Stainless Pure water filer bottle 1600 litres.

I've already got their Explorer Canteen, which is a brilliant product, but it's too militaristic-looking to use at work, and really I'm looking for something which will give filtered water to use primariy at work in the office or for urban jaunts, but also something I can use occasionally abroad for dodgy water supplies but as an alternative to the canteen - so weight isn't really an issue.

Ideally I've been looking for something made from stainless steel and insulated, but none of the insulated bottles I've found so far include water filtration.

There are very few reviews I can track down on the net for the Eco Bottle - just wondering if anyone out there is using one?

Specifically, I'd like to know:

  • Does the cap leak?
  • How durable does the straw arrangement feel, and is the bite part of the straw replaceable?
  • Whilst my Drinksafe Canteenmakes everything taste like spring water, the Eco bottle uses a new type of filtration system, according to their website. Does water stlll taste OK with no strange aftertaste?  This would be the dealbreaker for me.
  • Does the neoprene cover provide any significant insulation?

Suggestions for any alternatives welcome.

I can't help you directly here as I've never used the product but if I were you I'd give Giles (the owner) a phone call and ask him. He's an extremely helpful chap and very friendly and I doubt he'd lead you astray with his answers.

I have used two different filters from Drinksafe and they've both been brilliant so I doubt that the one used in the stainless bottle would be any different.

As to how good the neoprene cover is, I'd say not very. Not because of any quality issues just that in my experience, neoprene covers over metal simply can't keep things hot or cold for very long. Obviously it'll be far more effective than the bottle on its own (and it'll help keep your bottle getting dinged) but I doubt you'll be comparing favourably it to a decent thermos.

Thanks, Warhippo, I'll see if I can contact Giles and take it from there.

Assuming they've maintained the same high standard of filtration as the explorer canteen then it's pretty rock solid, and I don't see why they'd have gone with anything weaker.

I used the explorer canteen to filter notoriously dodgy Indian tap water and had no ill effects, and just to prove the toxicity of the tap water I then went and got ill by accidentally eating salad which had been washed in it - doh!
