Yes, that is the kind of deodorant i meant . I had one of those too and dropped it on the tiled bathroom floor. It shattered into a 1000 pieces. Another way to make it lighter then . I gave it up at that point because it only worked medium ok for me. Its a cool substance though. It can also be used for disinfecting small cuts and make them stop bleeding , for example from shaving etc.
I wish I had known it was good for cuts! I was in Mallorca over half term and managed to cut my legs to shreds on the 'macchia'; the salt stick would have been perfect.
I think as a deodorant it is only average, but fine for traveling compared to the heavier alternatives.
Alum deodorant is made of the same stuff as a styptic pencils. I think merino is only relatively odour resistant...Relative that is to the awful tomcat piss smell that sweat on polyester or nylon produces after just a few hours. One tip is to keep well hydrated so that you void most metabolic waste products such urea, uric acid, creatinine and sodium chloride through your kidneys and bladder rather than your skin. In the healthy subject, urine stays sterile in the bladder while bacteria start acting on the constituents of sweat as soon as it arrives on the skin. Shaving your private places or using depilatory creams help, too.
I have found that part of the solution to the problem is literally to hand wash woollen base layers after an initial plain water rinse, paying particular attention to those areas most subject to sweating. Soap is useless for washing wool that's been worn next to profusely sweating skin, a mild detergent is much better. I find this works better than a machine for synthetics, too.
Alum deodorant works better as a saturated solution in a pump spray or, if using a crystal, having been soaked for a minute or two in warm water and applied wet.
When I was going to visit some friends in Austria they asked if i could bring some LUX soap flakes with me as they hand-washed their marino clothing items in it.
Since returning - 3 years ago - I now do the same and it seems to work.
Possibly the flakes contain lanolin, plus they have the added advantage of being used in water at hand temperature, so there are no shrinkage problems.
I've been using soap flakes on my merino since posting last and it seems to be working. As the weather has been so pants recently, I've been wearing them to the gym to get a sweat up as well.
