Any recommendations for a mid weight fleece jacket that doesn't cost too much e.g. around £40 or £50 max. No bright colours or too much in the way of two-tone. Looking for something stylish like a Mammut Tundra but costing about a quarter of that. Cheers, John

Gotta say that Mammut fleece is reet expensive..... WTF!

Mammut are About as much as dead bird. From most people 40-50 in this sort of weight/style is going to mean sales though, because say ME's pullover version is still 90 pounds RRP. Two reasonably promising options in budget: Rohan - multiple styles all very reasonably priced: a, b. Alternatively a good source for sales in this sort of thing are Pataguicci better sweater's. Every time they switch colours etc for each season there's some at 50% off. Mountain factor seemingly only XL/XXL right now though(here). Probably some other sales on other stuff too of course.

If you just want a fleece there's plenty to choose from. A rail-full at TK Maxx, for a start. Note that Martin's links to Rohan ones are in a 25% off offer that runs out on 27/11.

The mammut tundra Fleece is a technical fleece with wool on the front for extra warmth and at the back only synthetic to wick of sweat and such.
So it's not just a fleece. I'm a big fan of Mammut clothing. It fits me very good. For a fleece you must consider what you need. Do you want only warmth or must it be extra warmth, block wind, shed water (rain) etc. (more like softshells)?
A plain fleece for use under a hardshell when the weather is bad (rain, cold wind) is normal warmth function enough. TAhis kind of fleece functions as well good when wheater is fine and a hardshell is not needed to block cold wind.
My favourite textile for this use is Polartec Thermal Pro. it's a very good textile for fleeces. Another option might be Technopile. But Thermal pro from Polartec lasts better after many cleanings IMHO than tecnhopile.
I own a Mammut Innominata Jacket Men. I like it very much. There are brands that make fleeces from polartec thermal pro as well. perhaps they are better priced to you liking.

Nah, mid weight thermal pro stuff is +-100 from most. Basic polartec 200 would probably be a little less, but there's terribly little of that about now for whatever reason. If we're being objective then the tundra's fabric is for casual fleeces The wool is there so it looks like a cardigan - just like the pebbled(?) finishes on the similar looking all polyester things are. Thats not really a criticism of course, because that sort of tough outer faced fleece is good for casual fleeces. Will last for absolutely ages too, so the extra cost really isn't terribly significant when viewed over time. Although the tundra does seem to have a real premium on it. At least with something like the Eiswand you can see why its ended up so pricy....

Not sure if this classes as mid weight or heavy weight but I have a Montane Jaguar like this one
http://www.fieldandtrek.com/montane-jaguar-jacket-mens-449290
but mine is all black. I think I paid £40 for mine - which I thought was a bargain. Other colours/sizes on Ebay ... but cost more.

.JPG) Montane Bear (Thermal Pro) is reduced to £43 at Field and Trek (I was given one for birthday a couple months ago - has long slim arms 'athletic' cut - if wearing much underneath best to size up IMO )

Rock and Run are doing the MHW offwidth jacket at £40 now. A thinner softshell but not a bad fleece really if you are average fit as opposed to the long armed, thin bodied athletic types that Rab and Montane sometimes cater for.

That Montane Bear Fleece sounds good as a midlayer fleece. Nice price for a Thermal pro fleece

TK Maxx...dig around till you find something you like for not much money

The Berghaus Polartec 200 jacket is fine for casual wear, or on the hill if you run really cold, and can be had for around £50 -- maybe less if you shop around.

I bought a montane jaguar fleece from field and trek about 3 weeks ago for £50 instead of £120! Go outdoors are about £60 I think at the mo. brilliant fleece, loads of furry stuff inside and much more wind resistant polartec outside. Think they call it the polartec windpro or something like that. Very highly reccommended, I love mine and haven't took it off!
