O.K. this one's for those with loads of dosh. At £299 for a fleece it's expensive. It's obviously made from Polartec Power Pro with a highloft lining for extra warmth. The reviews I have seen (American) say it's very good. One says 'having an inner surface which is like the pelt of a baby polar bear'!

No-one else does a jacket with the lofted lining and before I consider it I thought I'd ask around to see if anyone had tried it on, or even seen it.

Have you also considered The Rab Baltoro Guide Pro Jacket It seems to me superficially at least to be a very similar jacket and a 100 quid less.

Here's the Eider on a uk website......

www.zalando.co.uk/eider-power-pro-jackets-blue-ei142b00n-502.html

The picture of the lining makes it look so comfy, but I have heard stories of problems with the taping.

The Rab Baltoro can be bought for £160 so nearly half the price.

Or the Patagonia Speed Ascent?

I'd guess that the Speed Ascent with an R2 lining will be the coolest of the three but that's offset by a completely windproof shell, unlike the Polartec Powershield Pro fabric which is used on the other two. I need to see at least one of these to make up my mind.

Ummm, powershield pro not all that air permeable. Much less so than straight powershield say - but of course also a lot more waterproof. CFM around 2, and HH ~3k. Certainly not a fleece technology.

(windshirts @~5, powershield standard some huge range, iirc ~5-10?!)

Don't know but the speed ascents outer fabric is almost certainly going to be a little bit more air permeable. Pati do also have a high loft PPro thing now, although its scary expensive.(350).

Some of us are at an age when we feel the cold a little more and are prepared to pay top dollar (whilst we can) if the goods deliver the performance required.

Martin thanks for the input. I trust I've got it the right way round and that Patagonia's R rated stuff gos from R1 - R4 with R4 being the warmest? When I see their stuff I know, but from memory?

Basically yes - R1 is thickish gridded powerdry, R2 lightish thermal pro (a little thinner than most do it I think?), R3 warm thermal pro and R4 some sort of membrane based windproof thermal pro thing. Although they do of course have a tendency to vary them a bit over time
