I'm helping a friend find a reasonably priced [say <£250] tent. He wants to use it for cycle touring and 3 season backpacking. It needs to be on the comfy side for 2 people both 6ft tall and with adequate gear/cooking space in porches etc. I though I'd find something by going through the OM reviews, but the majority are for tents no longer in production. So, over to you folks for ideas. As a guide, he already has a Trango, which is too heavy and he likes my Mountain Wing 2 which I'm refusing to sell to him.

Aren't there some extended porch tents around?? I know vango do a few that could come in at that price and are about 2.6kg. Check out Kendal camping centre as they sell a lot of vangos and if you check the shop out (by phone or in person) you will get to know about the deals not put up on the website. Big savings which can be 40% off or more!! Not sure you could get bikes in the porch of those extended tents but should be good for storing panniers and cooking in.

I'd have a look at the MSR Hubba Hubba or event the three person Mutha Hubba. They have a good amout of inner space, helped by having near vertical walls, and have two good size vestibules.

I think the SL3 is an excellent 2 person tent with lots of room and for the money/size/weight is difficult to beat.

Vango Equinox falls in the price range, and has a nice big porch you might even be able to squeeze a bike into... heavy for backpacking though. Back to the old SL3 and Scarp 2 suggestions, I guess!

I think the SL3 is an excellent 2 person tent with lots of room and for the money/size/weight is difficult to beat. Just had a look at a video review of the SL3. Certainly looks like a good tent, but the 5"8' tall reviewer was critical of the entrance size, saying taller people would find it small. So, not quite sure about that one. Thanks for the sugestions so far.

Then may I suggest the SL5?

Mmmm. Do you mind saying which review? Anyway I was that surprised by that statement that I've just got it out of the bag!!! (plus I've not got much going on ). The tent is over 5' tall at the apex. The zip is vertically 170cm long, it is actually longer as it curves at the top to open wider. The base length of the door flap is 145cm wide. So I don't exactly see what he's getting at. Plus I've used the tent for 2 blokes in crap weather with no probs. Fair play though I'm about 5'9" and my mateis a bit taller.

Is there any 2-3 man tent with a bigger or taller entrance than the SL3?

What about one of these : clicky

I found the review here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xh05zk_big-agnes-emerald-mountain-sl3-tent_sport Just don't get distracted by the first 30 seconds or so.

I think by SL3 Wurz meant the Golite Shangri La 3.

I think by SL3 Wurz meant the Golite Shangri La 3. You know, I had this feeling I was looking at the wrong tent, but Google was adamant. I have an REI Quarter Dome, which makes me think kindly of American tents. That's my excuse....

Ah there we go! Sorry I meant the GoLite that Jimmy mentioned. I was preparing some choice words for the reviewer.

Hopefully without getting a kicking, i'm curious as to why i have yet to see tents like the Banshee 200/300 and the like mentioned? Are they considered amateur only?
|
 |
Original poster mentioned it was for 2 6 foot tall people with adequate porch space for gear/cooking. IMHO that kind of rules the Banshee 300 out...
