In these (supposedly) more enlightened times; do they do a veggie rat pack?

I don't eat nuthin' that had a face (and for these purposes that includes earth worms, slugs, snails, etc).

Yes they do. And it is very tasty. Speaking as both a serviceman AND a veggie.

Unfortunately there is only one menu so if you have to have more than one day out the menu can be dull dull dull!

Never seen it for sale on ebay or anywhere else actually.

My sister-in-law asked for a veggie meal when she started work on an oil rig. She got mashed tatties, chappit neeps and some brussell sprouts. She says that they are getting better at it.

IIRC, it has a veggie TIkka-Masala and some veggie bangers and beans in it.

Very tasty both of them are.

Paddy did you see it in the paper this week aparently the army havcent made the currys too hot as thy dont want to be issuing too much bog roll can you imagine sharing a bivie with someone whos just wolfed that down,

"S-10 at the ready"... "GAS! GAS! GAS!"
!
You watch in a couple of years the will have Hallall (spl) and other minority dishes to avoid costly law suites from ethnic minoritys (are we still aloud to call them that?)claiming that the army is discriminatory.

All I know is when I was a marine we used to get packs that had been made in the early eighties! You could tell from the Mars Bar packaging and the fact that the chocolate had turned white! Never did us any harm though?

I lived for many weeks on 'rat packs' that had 'Aztec' bars in them. Remember them? they had left the shop shelf some ten years earlier.

I think the reason there is no eat by date is because what hungry squaddies do not consume is then sold to unsuspecting wannabees. Use modern freeze dried stuff, it is lighter to carry and you will not be bunged up for days.

I remember the Aztec bars during my early years as a Bootneck. Wonderful things. Nice and cold after a few hours yomping round the "Moor" or the "Common". Also have fond memories of cold Bacon Grill. Anyone remember the tubes of condensed milk - great on Biscuits Sweet. The boil in the bag rats we were issued with before I reverted to a civvy ('04) were very nice. Local cheapo food shop has been selling individual meals and pudding for 39p. Grabbed a load.

I believe that the MOD Rat Packs had a 7 year shelf life. But as they had too many unused ones on the shelf a few years ago they decided that they had a 10 year shelf life. Expect the shelf life to be extended to 15 years soon ...

Rat packs are getting bloody difficult to find recently, even on Ebay. I used to get mine from Surplus & Outdoor in Kidderminster but they've been out of stock for weeks now. I suppose that the army is pretty busy these days and hasn't many to spare...

biscuits brown (great air rifle targets), cheese in a tube, tins of spam, all left over from WW11 were issued to my brother (Marine in traing) in the early 70's, he's still here, but is quite mad, not sure if its down to the food or just part of the Royal culture ?

Biscuits Brown were ok with those little tins of meat spread - if you were really hungry. I joined the Corps in '74 and served 22yrs. Yes we are a bit mad :-)That's what my wife keeps telling me anyway and she should know - Ex-Wren !

According to Roger Stenner of Practical Airsoft, it is now illegal to resell MOD GP Ration Packs. This prolly explains why they have become so hard to get hold of...
